Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the 'colors' of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true 'colors'? The official website for The Colors Within (Kimi no Iro), the new anime feature film by Science SARU and director Naoko Yamada (K-ON!, The Heike Story, A Silent Voice), began streaming a new special "dance" promotional video on Tuesday. The video features original animation of the three main characters dancing, made exclusively for the video, along with the film's insert song "Suikinchikamokudoten Amen."

Yamada herself drew the storyboards for the video, while the film's character designer and animation director Takashi Kojima was the key animator. The Power Puff Boys dance group choreographed the dance.

The nuns at the Catholic girls’ school in Nagasaki, Japan that Totsuko Higurashi attends in Naoko Yamada’s feature The Colors Within might well sing, “How do you solve a problem like Totsuko?” She spends a lot of time in chapel reciting the serenity prayer. She tries to follow the rigid rules, but she keeps stumbling into behavior the church considers improper — and even sinful.

Part of the trouble lies in her ability to see “colors,” a sort of polychrome aura that people radiate, revealing their true essence. Totsuko relies on those perceptions for guidance, rather than on theology or lessons. The gentle blue of classmate Kimi Sakunaga causes her to maintain their friendship even after Kimi drops out of school. On a trip north together, they meet Rui Kagehira, a repressed boy who plays the theremin. They start jamming in an abandoned church and form the band White Cat Hall.

There are no real villains in The Colors Within — the characters struggle with others’ expectations rather than external foes. Totsuko strives to balance the dictatress of conventional religiosity against the very real understanding the visions of color bring her. Although he loves music, Rui’s mother expects him to become a doctor; Kimi feels crushed by her grandmother’s expectations. Friendship and music provide the characters with a much-needed outlet.

Naoko Yamada's newest feature film The Colors Within is due to open in the U.S. on January 24 next year, but some viewers will be able to see it sooner. All three screenings are part of the Scotland Loves Anime festival.

An original story created by Yamada and her regular scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida, The Colors Within is told mainly through the eyes of Totsuko Higurashi, a dreamy girl at a Catholic high school in present-day Nagasaki. Totsuko has the ability to see the inner colors of the people around her, and she's strongly drawn to another girl at her school, Kimi Sakunaga, who has an especially beautiful color. When Kimi stops coming to school, Totsuko tracks her down to a small bookshop, where she also meets a shy boy, Rui Kagehira. Somehow, all three youngsters end up practicing together as a band on a nearby island, expressing their secrets and insecurities through the music they make.

Thanks to Anime Limited, I interviewed Yamada together with kensuke ushio, who will need little introduction. He composed for Yamada's A Silent Voice and Liz and the Blue Bird and he's all over anime at the moment. In addition to The Colors Within, he's providing the music for the very different Science SARU anime DAN DA DAN and the series Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. Kylie McNeill, known for her role as Suzu in the English dub for Mamoru Hosoda's BELLE, is back in the fray, this time being the voice actress for the character Kimi Sakunaga, and together with her, the songs here will also be dubbed to English, much like in her previous film:
