My Pioneer 85fd blu-ray player might be in its final throes. My display is a Pioneer Kuro plasma, 1080p. Does anyone have any thoughts on which contemporary BD player gives the best picture for standard blu-ray discs on a 1080p screen? I'm looking at Panasonic, Magnetar, Reavon, Sony. I've read at least one comment that Panasonic isn't great for standard blu-rays, and I've read that Reavon is iffy and the company is in trouble. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sometimes, you can find old premium BD players at the local thrift stores or through online shopping for store brands like Goodwill. The brands that I usually encounter are Samsung and Sony, with the occasional Panasonic, and cheap LG and Phillips/Magnavox player in the mix. The only Pioneer disc players that I've seen on shelves were old DVD models, from the glory days of the brand.

I know it might cost a bit more but if you can grab a used OPPO 103..go for it. Before I went 4k I had a Pioneer Elite 101 fd along with 2 other Panasonic Plasmas.I used a pair of OPPO 83's before grabbing a 103 which I still have.
the OPPO and the Pioneer were perfect together. 83 players were glitchy but excellent..if you find one that the original drive was replaced by OPPO grab it.. Avoid the OPPO 95 players..period. |

I second the vote for the Oppo 103. Best overall 1080p HD player, in my experience, and very reasonably priced on ebay. Try and look for one that is region-free, if you can. I have two 103's (one connected to a plasma) and love them.

I just picked up a few more used Samsung BD players, two of which were newish models and none of them could update the firmware via network, so all gave "could not connect" errors despite full connectivity. If anyone is picking up old players at thrift stores or eBay or whatever, be aware that you may have to manually update the firmware with a USB drive, which means tracking down firmware files on Samsung support sites.
