Default So now that this war is nearing an end...

I am interested in getting a nice, affordable blu ray player. All suggestions are welcome , I would be buying this in addition to my hd dvd player. Now I have zero interest in buying a ps3 for I feel it has no place in a home theatre. I have an xbox 360 for games. Now you may disagree or flame me for saying that but understand this I want a real player not a gaming console.

I am ONLY interested in stand alone players. Lets hear some suggestions.

well, your prejudice against the ps3 as a "gaming console" really is shutting you out of the most versatile BD player on the market, but it's your choice.

regardless, budget and priorities would be nice to know. sharp is supposed to be a super-fast loading player... panasonic seems to be the most feature-complete among the standalones but is a bit more expensive... and if you don't give a hoot about 1.1 etc you can get much cheaper...

the Pana BD30 is almost as fast as the PS3 for loading (a couple de seconds slower) and if you plan getting a AVR with next gen codec it stream it all..

The best feature IMHO is that it's completly silent and doesn't generate extra heat...

it's around 429$ on the next.. witch is a little more than the 40gig PS3

Welcome. I have a Sony BDP-S301 I bought at Sam's for $277. (pre-Christmas) It's main drawback is the slow load time -- up to 35sec. on POTC.

You'll see new lines and less expensive models appearing very soon, imo.

The PS3 is the only player on the market that you can download a free update for when the final Blu-Ray spec, Profile 2.0 comes out. EVERY other player on the market will be stuck with Profile 1.1 (but 2.0 isn't that much of a change really). And since it's one of the cheapest players on the market (source: Amazon... and it comes with Spider-Man 3 ) you really should consider it.

But your choice I guess. I won't try and convince buyaps3 you.

I think he's scared that he'll play a PS3 game and fall in love. That's understandable, I mean who wouldn't love Uncharted or Warhawk?

Get the Panasonic DB30, or if you are going to wait for a couple of months get the 50. Either way they will be great.
