Hoping for another VDMS encode after Memories of Murder!
Also for those interested in this thread, I've made a screenshot comparison between the Criterion BD, the 2019 Studiocanal BD (Éclair grade, 2K restoration from 4K scan) and the new Janus trailer of the 40th Anniversary 4K restoration to show the color differences between the restorations. IMO, the newest grade looks the best across all frames. https://slow.pics/c/4CifDFKf |

This will (probably) be my first Curzon pickup. Hopefully not the last but, so far, they seem to be HIGHLY arthouse oriented. Paris, Texas is the first film they've released I've actually heard of. Arthouse as well but I took a liking to it and would love a 4K of it.

Extras are up on the Curzon website, includes new interview/intro plus the boxset extras (though no mention of commentary?) and a booklet with interviews with “Wenders, Harry Dean Stanton, Natassja Kinski, and Dean Stockwell, as well as a new interview with Wenders, behind-the-scenes photos, and an essay by Kelly Powell”. Missing from the Criterion are a different interview with Wenders, The Road to Paris, Texas, Claire Denis and Allison Anders, Cinema cinemas and a different booklet.

If they use the same authoring house that did Memories of Murder, it will look great and probably better than Criterion, although I must say that they stepped up their game in recent months and are now capable of delivering really good work. Criterion shouldn’t mess it up though. (They did mess up Wenders’ Perfect Days). If they don’t, a good comparison may be The Last Emperor which had top-tier Arrow and Turbine encodes in Europe and seemingly a very good one by Criterion as well.

I just received confirmation after emailing Curzon that Paris, Texas (as well as Werckmeister Harmonies) are VDMS encodes. Going with Curzon for PT (I'm sure LSP or FiM's work will be on-par, but Curzon's release having more extras was the main factor; I already have Criterion's WH UHD, and while a VDMS encode will be better, I'm content with the disc as-is).

Here’s what the Carlotta has: INTRODUCTION DE WIM WENDERS (HD) . ENTRETIEN AVEC WIM WENDERS (49 mn – HD) - this is most likely the same interview found on the Curzon BD that’s in their Wenders box. I’ll try to confirm the runtime. . CHANEL : ENTRETIEN AVEC WIM WENDERS (4 mn – HD) . SCÈNES COUPÉES AVEC OU SANS COMMENTAIRE AUDIO DE WIM WENDERS [ENREGISTRÉ EN 2004] (24 mn) . CINÉMA, CINÉMAS : WIM WENDERS (12 mn) Réalisation : Claude Ventura • Co-auteur : Philippe Garnier - © 1984 INA . FILM SUPER 8 (7 mn) . BANDE-ANNONCE DE LA RESTAURATION (HD) |

By most accounts, the Criterion UHD of WH was already excellent, so I'm wondering what room for improvement there'd be, especially on a 4K SDR release.
Either way, I still think I'm happy with the FiM-encoded Carlotta blu-ray. It seems to do the job for Tarr's film. I'll see though. If I do get Paris, Texas on UHD I'll probably just get the standard release from Carlotta for economical reasons. Last edited by mande2013; 09-10-2024 at 04:06 PM. |
