Question Soundbar Vs Home Theatre surround sound system?

Hey,
When I upgrade to 4K eventually, I'd imagine to take advantage of the newer sound formats (Atmos, DTS X etc) - I think I have to get a new system - was thinking of this sort of thing:

Can I still use my older speakers as Atmos speakers might be really expensive

Another option is s soundbar, but from what I read, the sound won't be as good as a home theatre though it does save a lot of a space. Is it a good enough option for watching movies?

Good enough is subjective. If you are used to Tv speakers or a budget soundbar/speakers, then a high end soundbar might be relevatory. If you are used to decent separate receiver and speakers, extra Atmos effect might not make up for how limited it sounds.

It’s not just speakers, but subwoofers. The bundled subs are rarely anywhere near as good as a decent separate sub.

Yes, you can use older speakers for Atmos. You can add Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers to floorstanders or mount speakers as heights or overhead while keeping existing speakers. You don’t have to replace everything. You don’t have to do it all at once either. Get your new receiver and add extra speakers later. Atmos receivers will happily work as stereo or 5.1 in the meantime and will be able to read the Atmos data so may give you extra acoustic trickery by processing the Atmos/X bitstream until you can get proper Atmos.

Thanks for your reply I'm used to a (to me, decent) receiver and speakers, but I listen to the sound with headphones So I think I'll go for the receiver as the soundbar could seem like a downgrade for me.
