Best Sounding L/R Speakers for DVD/BD Movie Sound? > $4K/pair

If you're a vintage DVD/BD movie collector like me you're likely to have been less than thrilled by the audio quality of lots of discs in your collection. I'm especially talking about movies from the mid 1940s through the mid 90s. Of course, there are a small handful of blessed exceptions, all BD editions: “Double Indemnity” (1944); “Whirlpool” (1949); "North by Northwest" (1959); “Collector” (1965); "PJ" (1967); “Colossus: The Forbin Project” (1972); “Conversation” (1974); “Love & Death on Long Island”

But if you do own such titles produced between those five decades don't many sound compressed-and possibly with a somewhat noisy high end, if there is much HF response at all? Any other aspects about the sound which you often find troublesome?

So, if you have spent at least $4K or more on L/R speakers-and maybe also $1K or so on a center speaker-then on a scale of 3 to 10, with 10 being most satisfied, how do most of your oldest or most of your DVD and BD movie titles sound to you?

For $4K, I'd be very curious about a pair of Aerial Acoustics 5T's. The 5T is a bookshelf loudspeaker, especially best if your space is not an overly ginormous one. The 5T's are ruthlessly revealing but are among the most neutral sounding speakers you will have the pleasure to find.

With the movies you listed, I think they can sound, at least, beyond decent with Aerial 5T's. Now the better your electronics, the better the overall experience should be.

I am seriously eyeing a pair of the Aerial 5T's myself because of my space being rather small -- otherwise, the next Aerial up, the 6T's (a floorstander) would be too big and too boomy for my studio apt. I'm seriously looking at an integrated amp from Luxman, the L-505z, which just came out a couple of months ago (a little under $6K).

Hopefully this will be a good start for you, esp. since you indicated a speaker budget right at $4K (Aerial 5T's in rosenut are just dollars off $4k, and ask for $4,400 in Ebony.

In my opinion, you should be asking for a lot more information than just the type of speaker they have.
