I own the previous standalone Criterion Blu-ray and the Toho 4K, both of which I'll now sell on. To my eyes, this looks identical to the latter but with better packaging and English subs and extras.
While I disagree with Svet's conclusion that the BD looks better, I can't really argue with criticisms of variable source quality and a noticeable touch of grain management. I would have liked to see an HDR pass to bring a little more depth and dynamism to the image. That said, I don't expect we'll ever get a much better-looking release of Godzilla 1954 than this. Close-up shots usually have plenty of fine detail and it's a more stable image than any previous presentation. The Japanese mono is perfectly good. The film as a whole is superb and continues to resonate and hit home 70 years on. It will not impress you like the best catalogue releases but it's an upgrade, albeit modest, and if you need the original Godzilla in the best available quality, here it is.
