Airplane! / Top Secret! 4K Collection (1980-1984)

Paramount will be releasing a 4K set titled: ZAZ: The Collection! on November 19th, which will will include Airplane! Top Secret!, and The Naked Gun. ZAZ refers to the great writer/director trio of Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker. This is a 6-disc set with 4K and BD copies of all three films. The set will also include collectible posters, and a booket.

[Show spoiler] This morning I noticed a listing for a 4K release titled: "Zaz: The Collection!", releasing on November 19th. I had no idea what it referred to, but I just noticed it credits Leslie Nielsen, Julie Hagerty, Robert Hays, and Val Kilmer. Doing some research, I found out this is a 4K collection featuring the work of writer/directors Jim Abrahams and brothers David and Jerry Zucker (or ZAZ for short). The release is listed as a 6-disc set, which I'm guessing is 3 4K films and 3 Blu-rays. Based on the credits, I think it's safe to say that Airplane! (1980) and Top Secret! (1984) are certain to be included, with The Naked Gun perhaps being the third one. I'll update the thread with more info and cover art as they come in.

That would surprise me, since it feels like Paramount's catalog UHDs almost never come with 1080p versions of the movies.

Would have made more sense to be an Airplane!/Airplane II! combo set like the old blu-ray.

They are inconsistent about that, but unless the 6-discs is wrong, I don't see how they get to that amount without BD's being included. The Naked Gun's release did have a Blu-ray disc as well. It's possible they could include Blu-ray film versions of stuff they're not releasing on 4K too like the 2 Naked Gun sequels.

It's theme are the trio of writer/directors though, and they had no involvement with Airplane II. I'd be surprised if this is an all 4K set.

That would be pretty amazing

If it was just Airplane 1, Naked Gun 1, and Top Secret would probably be double dip fodder once the singles of the sequels come out.

Maybe it’s including the Police Squad series and not the Naked Gun film (which I’m pretty sure only one of them directed)

Yeah, I was doing that math before I made the post. There's no three movies that exactly match that runtime, and are released by Paramount, I don't think.

I thought about that as a possibility too for one of the included BD's. Paramount released that back in 2020 on a single disc.

Great news. The BD for "Top Secret!" was a huge letdown, so I'm hoping for better quality here. Haven't seen "Airplane!" in quite a while.

I would be too, though Paramount has been moving away from tossing Blu-Rays in most of these 4K releases.

Plus, they have 4K masters of all of those in the can (Airplane II and the Naked Gun sequels), as they've been available on streaming for a while now.

I'd be thrilled if they released all of them in one big shot but who knows. Airplane II they had nothing to do with but the Naked Gun series they're all still producers of so it's not odd to include them. Maybe with II they could just make a joke of its inclusion lol.

The remaster for Airplane! is lovely overall BUT they've murdered the opticals on the Blu, they're not just heavily scrubbed but the colour is wonky and motion has this bizarre sped-up look to it, and there are more opticals in here than people may think. I hope they've taken another crack at them for the UHD rendition. Oh, and they erased the wires in the disco dancing bit with Robert Hayes. I always thought they were part of the charm, and the trivia track on the old Blu even delights in pointing them out, but the joke was lost on whoever oversaw the 4K transfer.

ZAZ re-cut "Top Secret." It was was shown in Los Angeles about ten years ago.
