Halloween Complete Collection Audio Weirdness

I was watching the original Halloween, the 35th anniversary version from the complete collection from Shout, and noticed something. I tried both the 7.1 Dolby TrueHD and the mono Dolby TrueHD....and it seemed off. I don't know what I haven't noticed it before, having had the set for years now.

At the very beginning, when Judith is making out with her boyfriend, on the blu ray, you can't hear what she or him is saying. The boyfriend says "Are you sure we're alone ?" Judith says "I think Michael's around here somewhere."

I know that that's what's said, as I've heard it before. But last night, there was nothing. As I said, I tried the mono track and the 7.1 track and could BARELY hear anything. I turned the volume way up and THEN I could hear it. I used both the surround mode and all channel stereo. In all channel stereo, the dialogue was just barely there.

Again, I don't know why I haven't noticed this before. Maybe because I normally don't watch this movie on the tv in my bedroom and normally use the tv in the living room.

Would there be much of a difference between watching with stereo tv speakers and a surround sound system ? Not a massive deal...I was just wondering.

I noticed the same thing years ago. I found the solution by googling the problem, and it turns out it could be fixed with a player setting adjustment with my Sony BDP-S3100 (it has been so many years I have no idea the source).

Here are the steps I saved on a text file from way back when:

Press the HOME button on the remote commander.
Press the left arrow and select SETUP (suit case icon)
Press the down arrow and select SCREEN SETTINGS.
Press ENTER / SELECT (middle button on the directional circle with arrows)
In the SCREEN SETTINGS setup, press the down arrow and set the BD ROM 24P OUTPUT, DVD ROM 24P OUTPUT and HDMI DEEP COLOR OUTPUT to OFF.*
Go back to the SETUP icon by pressing the RETURN button on the remote
Press the down arrow and select AUDIO SETTINGS
Press ENTER / SELECT
In the AUDIO SETTINGS setup. press the down arrow and set the DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT to PCM, BD AUDIO MIX SETTING, DTS Neo:6 , AUDIO DRC to OFF.*

*For each option remember to press the ENTER / SELECT button to save the settings.

I have a different player, but this seems worth a try. Just a quick ask....does the screen stuff really matter for the audio, or was that just part of the text file that you cut and pasted ?

In this same set, I’ve experienced an audio drop out with the original Halloween II… when Ben Tramer’s friends are describing his disappearance to the police, there’s a millisecond or two where a character is muted. I don’t have the exact timestamp, but has anyone else caught this?

I haven't noticed that particular problem, but I just watched the first movie and am about to watch the second. I'll keep an ear open...

You'd think it would be unrelated, but all of that was in the step by step instructions so I just did it all. I don't recall the particulars (this was way back in 2016). Never had any audio glitches with any BD after that, though I haven't used that specific player in the years that have passed since I upgraded to 4K.

The BD Audio Mix setting...is that BD secondary audio ? That's what it's called on my player. On that setting, PCM only sends stereo sound with left front, right front speakers and the subwoofer. During the opening scene of Jurassic Park, when the men are shooting their guns, on the PCM setting and BD secondary audio set to on, the gunshots are just left and right. I turned BD secondary audio off and the receiver then said Multi In and the effects were in the right place.

Using PCM, I COULD hear the way too soft dialogue from the beginning of Halloween...but again, with PCM and the BD secondary audio on, it was only stereo. Later tonight, I'll try PCM with BD secondary audio off and see what happens.

a new problem. Using PCM, there is no bass. during the credits of Jurassic Park, there is supposed to be a big boom sound when the titles appear. In bitstream, the boom is almost felt in your chest. In PCM, there IS no boom.
