Question First Blu-Ray experience - sizing is off?

Pardon my inexperience. Just hooked up my new Blu-Ray (Panasonic) to my Sony LCD 52" XBR4. Watched Spiderman 3 and could not seem to get rid of the top and bottom borders. I can use the zoom feature on the LCD but in "takes away" from the 1080P resolution. On the Blu-Ray player, I have set 16:9. SHould movies such as this be seen full screen? What I am missing. Thanks in advance - Tony

the video is presented in 2.40:1 aspect ratio, just as it was shot

Which brings up the question: Why don't they make 2.40:1 aspect ratios on our HD TVs? I hate getting the top and bottom of the movies cut off by those black bars.

No what you are seeing is supposed to be there. Movies that are in widescreen that fill the screen are either 1.78:1 or 1.85:1. Movies with the black bars are usually 2.35:1 or 2.40:1. It has to do with the aspect ratio in which the movie was filmed. Most directors use the 2.35:1 aspect when fiming. Hope this helps. Welcome to the forums.

I think we have to get the directors cuts to see the stuff they're hiding behind the black bars.

You might want to ask the companies to make a wider widescreen t.v.

Set your Sony panel to "Full Pixel" in settings. That will map every pixel from the BD to every pixel on the panel.

As regards the highlighted text:

It's such a common question, it has its own, stickied thread. Have faith, most of us are harmless!

Welcome to the forum Tony. Don't mind me. I'm a goofball with no malice twards anyone. We have been talking about black bars and aspect ratios to day infact. No question is silly. Thats what we are here for. To make fun of yo... I mean to take your questions seriously with dignity and respect.

Black bars are normal and of no consiquence. You are seeing the entire movie as seen in theaters that way.

Have fun here and Welcome!!!

IF the FAQ section actually answered some FAQ's, this type of thread might be alleviated.
