I'm thinking of buying some of my favorite movies to use as coasters on a coffee table once they get down to $1.
Transformers will be #1 coolest coaster what other uses are there for these? |

Hehe, no joke, I got the dud copy of Goblet of Fire when I bought my Harry Potter set. When the replacement arrived, I tossed the mistake on the end table next to the couch, and I do use it as a coaster

For something to be a collector's item (as in having value not just pack rats keeping things) they need to have more demand and limited supply.
HD-DVDs don't fit into that since anyone alive can get one now and demand will fall not rise. |

I've owned a 360 add-on since before the PS3 came out and I've been torn over the last few months of what to do when the time comes (like now). I only own about 9 HD-DVDs and I'm not sure what I'll do when the titles become available on Blu. I already have a friend who offered me 15 bucks for Serenity (I only paid 11 used for it). I have another friend who has a ton of import HD-DVDs that I might borrow stuff from (like Elephant Man and other non-US released titles). If I ever get a Blu-ray burner for my laptop, I might hook up the HD and do some ripping.
I'm not big on selling DVDs, games or systems that I've already purchased; you always get screwed. I knew going into this format one that only one would survive. After playing with my PS3 for a month, by Christmas 2006, I knew I shouldn't have grabbed the HD add-on. |

Heck I still have about 62 laserdisc movies in my closet. I thought the picture was so nice the first time I played it. But this time I decided to wait though with HD hardware. But in the end I picked the winner ![]() ![]() |

When DIVX croaked and unloaded the discs at firesale prices I picked up a copy of "There's Something about Mary" for 50 cents or a dollar, just for laughs.
I had loved that movie in the theater and was really annoyed when it was announced as a DIVX exclusive. So it was kind of a trophy for me to pick it up when the format died. |

Well I was really rooting for HD-DVD before the PS3 got released. Their encodes were better, complete specs, reviews were generally more favorable. Blu-ray stumbled out of the gate but rolled on and never once looked back once the PS3 came about. This was the real difference. HD came to the market as mature as it would ever be, Blu-ray has gotten stronger as time goes by. First by moving from 25gb to 50gb, using more lossless audio options, better encodes, improving profiles. All of them were growing pains but Blu-ray's ability to expand and have breathing room is the advantage over HD-DVD coming to the market bumping their heads against the ceiling. Oh, and the funny thing was the original reason I went with HD-DVD was because Warner had more titles for them and The Sopranos was initially announced only for HD-DVD. However, I couldn't have been more excited when Warner went Blu exclusive. |

Some people collect "mayflies". I'll bet there will be more than a few collectors who will pick up ultra cheap players and as many HD DVDs as they can get their hands on, and even try for the entire set of released discs. It's harmless, Blu-ray has won.
