Post Resident Evil 4

Does anybody think that RE4 is somewhat overrated?

I do like the game. I think it's enjoyable. But as a fan who started in the late 90s with RE2, I never considered RE4 to be a "real" RE game. Yes, I know that it's Capcom's franchise, so they have the final say on the mechanics, story, and so on. And a lot of players admitted back then that they liked the then new third person viewpoint more than the old fixed camera style.

But RE4 has a plot and overall tone that's so different from the prior games. However, as great a game as RE4 is, I really wish they had did a 'real' RE4 first, where we got to play as the ex-STARS members, etc, in order to fight Umbrella and defeat them on their own turf. We belatedly got a game in that format with The Umbrella Chronicles on the Wii, which also had co-op. But on-rails shooting games are just meh, because they don't feel like a proper part of the series. And co-op makes RE games feel less scary, because RE5 and 6 was more action based than the PS1 era.

Anyway, I hate RE4 for these reasons.

The story...

Has little to do with the previous games. It's like going from RE6 into 7 as well. Those games also have nothing in common, besides Chris featuring as a protagonist. But they look different from each version.

The last mainline games before 4 were 3: Nemesis and CV. Doesn't concern viruses anymore. Rather, it's a parasite, and a cult. So if you play CV, then 4, they don't feel like they are remotely linked.

The enemies...

I like the bosses, and the villagers are generally a challenge. But zombies and mutated creatures to me were just a better fit for RE.

The gameplay...

Feels clunky in this day of age, despite what you could label as being modern at the time. But the game is just a shooter at heart, with horror vibes here and there. I also think buying weapons from a guy with a shop is silly, as it made the idea of finding guns mostly null and void, since this game has a reward system, which was the precursor to microtransactions, if I must be frank. Now you just buy the damn things. Then you do karate and grappling moves on stunned enemies, with characters being more cool with their new skills and dialogue, and it's why RE to me, became more like a DC Comics type series rather than being remotely creepy.

"What 'R' ya selling? Hehe. Thank you!"

The same applies to key items. In older games, you had to do stuff for a while to gain access to otherwise unexplorable areas, and a big part of the game was the atmosphere, the eerie music, and then getting the key item, which often felt like a reward. This is why I brought it up in the Silent Hill 2 remake thread. That to me is survival horror. Even The Evil Within games are more horror than RE4, despite copying from RE4 a lot.

But in RE4, the gameplay is more linear, and a boss battle usually ends with the key 'magically' appearing. So like, now you just don't have to bother finding it.

Last, but not least, Capcom copies other games.

I feel like RE8 is generally, just a cut-and-paste job of RE4, with Silent Hill mythology sprinkled in there. But rather than make out it's supernatural, oh, it's a mould. Or a machine. Or it's a dream. Just because Konami never released their game.

Aye. Sure it is just inspiration, when a company decided to cancel a well received concept. More like hyenas picking at the carcass.

Granted, I suppose other people copy games or media, but Capcom has been guilty of doing it a lot. Then this happened. But this isn't me trying to bash on Capcom. Although the facts are out there by now, that they do indeed, copy other games and try to take credit where it ain't due.

Also, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is a big rip off of The Last of Us. But I'll do a follow up post about it later on.

Hello! Resident Evil 4 is an absolute classic of survival horror. Its gameplay revolutionized the genre with the handheld camera and intense action without losing the essence of terror. Leon’s story in the village is still brutal, and recent versions have breathed new life into the game. What is your favorite part? By the way, thank you so much for these articles, they are always very useful! I like slot games, my favorites are Fire’n Diamonds and Midas Dynasty by Tom Horn Gaming. I also follow DiceGirl Egle on Twitch, a slot expert who shares interesting strategies. Good day everyone!

It maybe has more horror than 5 and 6, but it has radically less horror than all the previous games.

It feels more like an Indiana Jones movie than RE. I think the plot has been all over the place since the mid-2000s.

I know. Some people don't give a toss about the story. But at least RE used to have a consistently understandable story. While now it feels like Capcom has just been making up dumb stuff like vampires, because it is something new to experiment with.

Of course, don't tell that to russident on Biohaze. Gothic things belong in RE. :P
