New Xbox Live will help Microsoft avoid Blu-ray
Is Microsoft preparing to launch a new Xbox Live to cater for more focused digital media delivery? Credit: Xbox Live.

Beside Toshiba’s official announcement of HD defeat, there’s really very little ‘other’ news currently doing the rounds in gaming circles. However, here’s a little nugget of rumour which, if true, could be related to the end of HD DVD and of direct benefit to Xbox 360 users.

Current speculation spinning free of the HD DVD circus suggests Microsoft could be preparing to introduce a standalone Blu-ray player now that its HD DVD player has been rendered obsolete.

However, in a statement regarding the fall of Toshiba’s HD format, the American software giant has commented that: “We will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room,” which perhaps points to a widening of the current Xbox Live Marketplace and its SD & HD movie and media downloads.
