Exclamation Amazon.com warns customers.

The following info has been added to every HD DVD player product page on amazon.com

Product Alert: On February 19, 2008, Toshiba officially announced that after a "thorough review of its overall strategy" they have decided to no longer develop, manufacture, and market HD DVD players and recorders. The company has reduced shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels and expects to be out of the HD DVD business by the end of March 2008. Future availability of HD DVD discs is unknown. HD DVD players will continue to play HD DVD discs and upconvert standard DVD discs to 1080p high-definition resolution. Check our High-Def 101 page for the latest information on the high-definition-player landscape.

This answers one of my remaining questions for this week:

Here's hoping brick-and-mortar retailers do the same.

That's really good of Amazon to do that.

Better inform the customers before the returns start to clog the Amazon warehouses.

Haha, that's a good point. Maybe it's not a purely altruistic gesture.

Toshiba says that they will take them back from retailers, so Amazon should stop letting people buy paperweights and take them off of their web site.

This comment however needs to be revised as the underlined part is misleading. It implies that a DVD unconverted is the same as true 1080p.

Heh, everyone knows neither Amazon nor Walmart was counted in the Nielsens. That and Phase Hydra viral marketing were the real reasons Blu-ray won the format war!

Expect all intelligent retailers to quickly adopt similar "warnings" with regard to HD DVD-related sales. No one wants to get sued.

Those people need to be rounded up so they can be mentally evaluated at a proper facility (before they end up on the news...if you know what I mean).
