Another slightly older Criterion release on my wishlist, but not on my shelf, was announced for 4KUHD. Gotta love it!

I wanna say I streamed this via Hulu an age ago.

I'm cheering this announcement big time after having recently enjoyed the Radiance Daiei Gothic box which sparked a strong desire to rewatch Ugetsu. Since I'd sold off my Criterion blu (along with pretty much my entire record/cd/film collection) 7-8 years ago, I was looking at repurchasing it, but something told me to hold off. Great timing!

Great to see a Mizoguchi on 4k.

Personally, I've never really connected with this one. Maybe one day, I will keep trying, there's plenty I enjoy about it, it just doesn't hit me as a whole, like some of his other movies.

Conversely, I don't understand why his final film, Akasen Chitai, gets overlooked. Still waiting on an English language Blu.

Not that this helps you now, but Eureka did include it in their now long OOP Mizoguchi box set:

Criterion have the rights to the film in the US, but who knows if they'll ever get around to releasing it on BD. It is streaming on the Criterion Channel (also in their Fallen Women Eclipse DVD set).

Oh yeah, I remember I priced that set on the secondary market, and that was the end of that.

The Criterion Channel is my source for it, but it's a glaring omission in my physical collection, given how highly I rate it.

The Blu-ray is a digipak, is this keeping it?

Yep, the Criterion announcement email shows it to be a Digipak as well.

All right. Cross one off the wish list. Now we just need Hausu, The Ballad of Narayama, Kwaidan, and an Ozu box set.

Day. One.

Hoping it will look as good as the recent Kurosawa releases.

If you have the current Criterion blu-ray, it's taken from the same 4K master. It's not likely to look vastly different than what's already on the market. That said, the Criterion blu-ray of Ugetsu already looks quite good in my opinion, so if you don't already own a copy, I definitely recommend picking it up or snagging this 4K upgrade when it comes out in April.

I dunno if society is quite ready for a UHD of House.

A UHD release of House may be the last hope for our society.

Thanks for the info. I don't own the Blu. I've only seen it on MAX, but I was happy enough with the image.

Will definitely be grabbing the 4K.

♫♫♫As sure as cherries were made for eating
And fish were made to swim in the sea
You were made to be loved a lot
So let's watch Hausu in UHD♫♫♫
