Keep mind, this is home console only. No handhelds! But Switch is included since it's technically both...
1. NES The OG! For me, nothing will ever top this one! It will forever sit as #1 for me! So many classics were berthed from this console like Supoer Mario Bros 1 &3, Zelda, Kirby, Punch Out, Excitebike, Duck Hunt, etc. Not to mention all the classic 3rd party games that originated here like Castlevania, Contra, Final Fantasy, Mega Man, Metal Gear, Tecmo Bowl, etc. Plus the NES single handedly resurrected the home console market! I may not even be into videogames today, were it not for this console! It is forever enshrined as the GOAT! 2. SNES Terrific 16-bit graphics, vibrant colors, a great Sony sound chip, and Mode 7! Plus, some absolute timeless classics! Not to mention cracking arcade ports of Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, Street Fighter 2, TNMT: Turtles In Time, and others! A fantastic library of both 1st and 3rd party games! The SNES truly stands the test of time! 3. GameCube Though not a wild commercial success, the GameCube will always hold a special place in my heart for so many reasons! I feel this period was Nintendo at one of its creative peaks! Pikmin was berthed out of this console! First person Metroid came from this generation! Luigi's Mansion started here! Animal Crossing started here! Eternal Darkness was a very innovative horror game at that time. Smash Bros really came into its own on GameCube, plus out of this came my all-time favorite Nintendo controller! So much so that I still use one today with my Switch! The only thing that held GameCube back was the mini disk format. Nintendo should have gone with standard DVD and let the GameCube double as a DVD player the way PS2 did. Doubling as a DVD player would've made the product more appealing and probably would have garnered more 3rd party support. 4. Switch Great concept! A home console/handheld hybrid with a great library of games! A solid effort somewhat marred by weak hardware that lead to a lot of poor performing ports of 3rd party games. Plus IMO it relied too heavily on Wii U ports and "handheldy" type games to round out its library. But overall a solid effort that hopefully will be even better realized by it's successor! 5. N64 Though it is home to THE pioneering and one of the greatest 3d platformers of all time, in Mario 64. The N64 was disappointing in several ways. Awkward control design, coupled with expensive cartridge prices and very little 3rd party support all combined for a disappointing generation compared to the previous ones. It had a decent collection of Nintendo classics like the two Zelda games, Paper Mario, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 007, Star Fox 64, Waverace, etc. But all in all the N64 does not quite stand the test of time like it's predecessors IMO. 6. Wii U Some of you might be surprised to see this one at 6 instead of 7, but I really do not think Wii U is the worst. I actually had a lot of fun playing many of the exclusive games on Wii U. But it's high price and low specs, not to mention confusing name hurt the sales which ultimately hurt 3rd party support. The tablet controller was a nice idea, but it had poor picture quality and had to be too closely tethered to the main console to make it viable as a portable option. Plus it needlessly added expense to the overall package that couldve been allocated to better performance. 7. Wii In short, I hated the Wii! I hated everything about it! I hated it's weak hardware. I hated that it didn't support HDTV'S. I hated that it forced you to play games a different way when I was perfectly happy with sitting on my couch and mashing buttons! I hated everything about it. So much so I completely checked out from Nintendo that entire generation! I am glad that some of the Wii specific games are getting Switch remasters so they're not forever stranded on that rancid console! Burn it! Burn it with fire! 9. Virtual Boy The Virtual Boy technically was not a generational console like the SNES or the GameCube. It was more of a Nintendo side project than anything, and I do applaud Nintendo for trying to do something innovative. But ultimately, we ended up with nothing more than a monochromatic moving View Master that never got off the ground. Funny thing is I don't hate the Virtual Boy like I hate the Wii and there WAS some fun to be had on this oddball machine like Teleroboxer, Mario Tennis, and Wario Land. But I have to put it last for how quickly it fell off the market. Last edited by Steelmaker; 01-31-2025 at 12:08 PM. |

NES
Wii SNES Switch Gamecube N64 Wii U I don't think Virtual Boy is considered a "console" in the same way the others are. So I didn't rank that. I've also never played or owned one. |

I could see if somebody had a decent Wii U collection like I did and didn't care for the amazing retro collections. I was really meh on the Switch at first since I'd played everything they ported from the Wii U already. It wasn't until M2 and Digital Eclipse started bringing out all the retro stuff that I really started swinging the other way for Switch.

1. SNES - Some of the best games of all time are on this console. Super Mario World, TLOZ - A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country. I can go on and on. It's my favorite console of all time.
2. NES - Where it all started for me. Simple graphics, but amazing games. The first video game I ever played was Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt. I was instantly hooked. 3. N64 - Mario's first time in 3D was incredible. TLOZ - Ocarina of Time is perhaps my favorite game of all time. While the amount of games on the N64 was low, the few good ones were fantastic. 4. Switch - Great idea with a ton of great games you can play on the go. Nintendo hit it out of the park with this console and I'm looking forward to the next one. 5. GameCube - It had a lot of very innovative games that stand the test of time. Not Nintendo's best console, but probably the most underrated. 6. Wii - Motion controls are not my thing. Too gimmicky and for casuals. Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 were a highlight, though. 7. Wii U - Similar to the Wii. They had interesting ideas, but the final product fell flat. 8. Virtual Boy - Laughably bad. I tried it at a friend's house. It hurt my eyes. |

Of course...
SNES was groundbreaking in that graphics were upgraded, and the controller added the shoulder buttons which made combinations possible. So many games that were brought over from the arcade platform. NBA Jam, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat. Then you had Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country. NES is the original. It brought entertainment into your home unlike any other console that I can remember. I think of add-ons such as the running pad and zapper gun. Games like Mario, Zelda, Punch-Out, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, etc. Not to mention the d-pad on the controller. N64 had the most realistic graphics at the time. 3D graphics completely change the way video games were made. Four controller ports that allowed for multiplayer options. 007>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Super Smash Bros. Star Fox. Mario Kart. Gamecube - I'll leave this here. https://www.denofgeek.com/games/nint...consoles-ever/ Wii - Nothing quite like it before. Plus, the Wii was one of the first consoles where you could "actively" participate. It was much more engaging with a group of people unlike any other console before. I must say, I'm bias to most of the consoles listed above because those are more from my childhood and early 20s. I have a personal reference point. Wii U - Not much to add. Switch - A handheld device has been done before, and I really don't see much innovation. What about the original content? Graphics? Virtual Boy - I remember playing it where a headache would follow afterwards. It fizzled out so fast at that. |

1. Switch - The most immersive entries of my favorite Nintendo IPs live here. Some favorite experiences include Mario Odyssey, Paper Mario Origami King and Let's Go Pikachu. Also loved getting to play third party games like Friday the 13th and Red Dead Redemption
2. Nintendo 64 - Mario 64 is the most groundbreaking game of all time. Game Boy transfer Pak and Pokemon Stadium were legendary. The birth of Super Smash Bros, and the best Mario Kart by far. 3. Super NES - This is where games started to feel immersive. Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are great examples. Also Super Mario World and DK Country might be the best platformers to have ever existed. 4. Wii - Earns it's place with the motion gimmick alone. Wii Sports was entertaining enough to dominate my entire summer of 2007. Had third party support where it mattered, like Rock Band and Dragon Ball Z. Other favorites were DK Country Returns and Super Mario Galaxy 2 5. Gamecube - It was great to have a console that was on par with the powerhouses of the time. Didn't have to miss out on third party games like The Simpsons Hit and Run and Dragon Ball Z Budokai. However, the first party games always felt a little lackluster to me. Exceptions include Animal Crossing and Melee. 6. Wii U - For what it's worth, I've always thought the best version of Smash was the one for Wii U. We also got Mario Kart 8, which is still holding up 10 years later. 7. NES - Limitations just make it difficult to really get into the "world" of these games. This is something that I think was perfected with the Super NES and expanded upon with every generation since. 8. Virtual Boy - Not even worth mentioning. |

That''s a tough one - nostalgia plays hard here.
Still, would have to go I think: Switch (despite not having a virtual console) SNES (great selection of games still being re-released today) N64 (short on third party support but SM64 and Zelda: OOT was revelatory) NES (first console and three great Mario games) Gamecube Wii (motion controls...fun for five minutes) Wii U (only console I didn't own) |

Switch
SNES - Squaresoft carried this system Gamecube - Nintendo trying to be Playstation (Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid etc..) also the birth of Pikmin and Metroid Prime N64 - kind of a failure if we’re being honest, but it had Ocarina of Time Wii - a decent library ruined by bad controls. also the virtual console was great NES - not my thing (fun games for a little bit, but not games I’d beat) Wii U - a shitty slow system that had a loading screen when you enter the settings. it had no business being released in 2012. |

Shouldn't the answer just be Switch or Switch 2 once it releases? Seems like you guys are just ranking the games by generation.
