So, this is getting a 3D release here in the US. (If you see it on Feb. 14th, you may be able to catch it in IMAX but without the 3D).

I saw the first Ne Zha in IMAX 3D at the Chinese. It was a decent kids action movie. The 3D was entirely behind the screen, so here's hoping they bumped it up for the sequel.

There are 3D screenings in Canada via Cineplex in at least Toronto. Sadly, none are scheduled in my area.
Edit: some also via Landmark in other areas (e.g. Orleans) Last edited by xenago; 02-12-2025 at 12:01 AM. Reason: landmark |

I got to see this today but 3D showings weren't available, it was only 2D IMAX or nothing.
So while I haven't watched the 3D version yet, I think it should have plenty of depth and lots of pop-out, and a lot of really impressive stuff where the characters are flying. It is a fairly epic film and it runs 2 hours 16 minutes without credits - the credits, which include a bonus scene, add another 8 minutes to the running time. |

Nezha 2 was fun. A nonstop action and fantasy spectacle. The story is overcomplicated, and the visuals are set to 11. Add in very dense, questionably translated subtitles, and I mostly gave up following the subtitles to better follow the action. It all looks very expensive. Wikipedia lists the budget as equivalent to $83 million USD, but I can't fathom any US animation studio could've produced this for less than $200 million.
The 3D is an upgrade from the first Nezha, but it still doesn't extend much before the screen. Thankfully there's miles of depth beyond the screen. This is not mild 3D, and there's plenty of shots that go slowmo so you can soak it all in. A few elements look post-converted, while others have such fine detail that they must have been natively rendered. I won't remember the story in a week, but this is the best 3D presentation of 2025 so far. |

While it's true that probably 99% of the box-office will come from China, it actually opened simultaneously here in the US. I watched it on the 12th.

We saw the film today, and I gotta say it just wasn’t for me. And you’d think it would be, because I’m a huge fan of both animated 3-D films and Hong Kong wuxia films. The problem is that the admittedly astounding animation design and excellent 3-D were torpedoed by the thoroughly obnoxious main character, the rock-bottom comedy writing, the lamentable overdose of potty humour, the incredibly convoluted plot even for this type of film, and the needless overlength. For those of you who can’t stand Cantonese comedy stylings, the writing in this film makes the comedy in Enter the Fat Dragon look like it was penned by Oscar Wilde. Seriously. But it is quite gorgeous to look at, and the 3-D eye candy is quite impressive. If only it had been an hour shorter. It’s definitely no Kung Fu Panda.

I managed to watch a 3D session, as others have said it is a depth-oriented presentation, I didn't see any pop out effects or significant work to focus on close up elements to take advantage of 3D, however it does have a lot of depth and looks like it's rendered in 3D. I had a good time watching it, so if you like 3D it's worth checking it out as I am not sure it'll be released on 3D Blu-Ray (hopefully it does given how popular it is).
Storywise it's similar to other Chinese films of this type (rebelling against Heaven for a good reason, Ne Zha's filial piety also being a strong aspect) and there's definitely references to the future events of Investiture of the Gods. I still think Jiang Ziya (Legend of Deification) is the better of Chengdu Coco Cartoon's offerings which is worth checking out (set after Investiture of the Gods). Ne Zha 2's also a bit too long for its own good (the Chinese seem to like their boss fights to take a while, which doesn't quite map over to what other audiences prefer). Overall if you like animated 3D films and have seen the first Ne Zha so you know what to expect it's worth watching I think. |

I'm glad I saw Ne Zha 2, and hope more foreign 3D movies are released in North America.
The movie itself is not for me... it feels about an hour longer than the plot can really sustain and drinking piss/puke humor is not at all what I am looking for in a film. Ne Zha 2 is definitely worth seeing in stereo over 2D, but the 3D in the movie is just okay overall. Like other aspects of the film, the conversion suffers from technical issues - even flipped depth for several frames - but they made it a fairly strong presentation which is which is the right choice when given a limited budget! I prefer a strong but flawed conversion over a subtle one, personally. |
