Default MSN's The Clymo Brief: "How Sony won the HD war"

With all the breaking news yesterday with Toshiba pulling out of the format war and stories popping up all over the internet I kept checking Microcrap's own MSN site and not a single thing appeared about it. I checked back today and look what I found

http://tech.uk.msn.com/news/article....mentid=7586445

So basically what he's saying is ignore Blu-ray and get yourselves a cheap HD-DVD player, even though no more new movies will be available for it I'm guessing after April/May time. The ones already available are more than enough apparantly. And unsurprisingly for an M$ site they're still trying to push the idea of HD downloads. When are these people going to understand that we're not interested in downloads, we want our shiny little discs to collect (well I do anyway). Just more FUD from a slightly different angle

Well M$ wanted downloads all along. In fact, Microsoft tried to make demands out of the studios (for it to continue with HD DVD support). That attempt by M$ did not go too well.

Who has a connection good enough to download a HD movie?

I have a 3mb DSL...but that's not practical to download a 40GB movie!

M$ = fail.

I guess the only reason M$ sided with HD-DVD was to prolong the format war hoping that people would just lose interest in either format, giving them more time to plan their download service. I seriously hope it fails miserably (and the films aren't in HD anyway regardless of how they market it).

Just when I think I couldn't like M$ any less I do.

Correct, someone else posted this which is an interesting read: http://www.dvdfile.com/index.php?opt...k=view&id=6497

When you look at the combination of resolution and bit rates, those downloads are quite poor.

That's a very good article. I think a lot more people should read it before saying downloads or upscaled DVD's are just as good as the true HD media, Blu.

AGREED!

I have 8mbps currently. 40GB would be annoying.
Not to mention, Comcast likes to get pissy when customers start hitting 200-300GB per month.

We won't discuss the DRM, the restrictions of play, and the volatility of these downloads.

Downloads are *at best*, competition for rentals, nothing more.

Whiffer.

These articles make it sound like Wal-Mart and Netflix etc had some kind of format opinion!

They didn't!

These are compainies that like MONEY, lots and lots of MONEY! If they though they could make lots of money selling/renting HD DVD they would be.

These companies didn't KILL HD-DVD they admited it was dead.

Imagine a man goes fishing and never comes home. First the family starts looking for him. After a while the coast guard ends the rescue mission and starts looking for the body, but they never find the body. It takes a while for everyone to realize he isn't comming home. Some may even start a memorial service while others are sure he's still alive. This is how I feel about Toshiba. Wal-Mart and Best Buy, and Netflix realized it was dead before Toshiba. But they no more killed it than the cousin who starts a memorial service before the wife admits the lost fisherman isn't comming home.
