Pointless for the home user currently of course, but that does allow plenty of room for future developments to utilise the cables.

Game industry is going broke and can barely make things run at 4k/60 on time. For movies it will always be useless

This isn't going to probably be needed for mainstream public use for maybe another decade but its good to see them finalise a standard for when it is needed and get stuff produced and growing for down the line.

Most movies are still going to be stuck at 4K as well as gaming. PCs with frame generation might be able to make use of the higher framer rates up to 480fps alongside higher resolution but they're still going to take about 10 years to properly get there. Next gen consoles won't go more than 4K/60fps for the majority of games and up to 165hz at most for most TV displays in the next consoles for support is likely.

I think commercial content is where this tech really has a place right now and hopefully they will start building towards an 8K content library for down the line or that resolutions going to be completely DoA as it has been on life support right now.

16K is really only suitable for CRT shaders on emulators, because it's the perfect resolution for both NTSC and PAL retro consoles, and even some handhelds. 16K is the only resolution where both 576 and 480 are a neat integer scale, which is ideal for 6th-gen consoles like the SEGA Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Wii, and the original Xbox.

That said, I'm not sure if current PCs can handle rendering CRT shaders at 16K just yet. Especially on top of Cxbx-Reloaded and PCSX2.
