Default Best DVD Upconverter Available?

I was wondering as to the best possible upconverter available - from what I have read, I would think it is the Oppo 980 - but, is there any discernable difference between the quality of the conversion between that and the PS3 or the DMP-BD30? Or perhaps a Toshiba upconverter (former HD DVD player)?Enough to justify a purchase, in any case. I still watch and buy DVDs, and I'm trying to make the best of them for the time being. Thanks.

Word of warning to this tale - no nonsense regarding DVD or Toshiba.

Your Blu Ray player should do the job nicely. I have a Sony upconverter that I was using until I went Blu.

Denon 5910CI is very highly regarded. $3800. You did say the best possible, no?

I've owned both an Oppo and the PS3, and I can say both do well.

So, you can't go wrong with either.

One advtange though with Oppo is that it is a Region-Free Player. If that matters to you then I would go with the Oppo

before my PS3, I had an Oppo 970. Those guys know what they are doing and they know how to build a extremely reliable player.

That is why I was ecstatic when I heard they were going to release a Blu-ray player within the year.

The Denon 1930CI or 1940CI is pretty outstanding.

It really depends on what price range you're looking at. The best upconverting dvd player right now would most likely be the Denon 3930 universal dvd player. Full Realta chip implementation, it can be picked up on Amazon right now for around $1300. This is best you can do right now outside of the video processors fed by a SDI modded dvd transport. The Oppo 980 is not the best upconverter but many use it as a transport to feed very expensive video processors, which often are considered the best dvd upscaling solution currently available. Many people are waiting for the release of the Oppo 983, coming in March and which has huge expectations from the online community.

If looking at BD players only the best upconverting player is the Samsung BD-1200 with the Reon chip(of course many complain about its BD performance though). The PS3 would probably come next, being a slight step down from the Reon/Realta solutions.

Ive owned a few upscalers and the PS3 is the best one Ive owned so far. Be careful with the Oppo if you own a DLP TV. They apparently have trouble with them. Hit or miss from what I have read.

As much as I hate to say it, the Toshiba XA2 is the best I have seen, even compared to the Oppo. They retailed for $1k, but I assume they will drop to the $200-$300 level.
