I reached out to Curzon directly and they confirmed both this and DANCER IN THE DARK will be encoded by VDMS!!!

“ More extras TBC” on the specs. I wonder what they will add. Not long until release.

For a movie like this it would be great to get some beefy making of doc or featurettes. Its possible Criterion might deliver more here.

Criterion will likely have more supplements, but Pixelogic encode is inferior to VDMS, so Curzon is going to be the best presentation. I guess maybe get both releases if you want everything, probably save $5 just getting the Criterion standard bluray.

I believe Criterion has only been using NexSpec as of late (correct me if I am wrong), but yes.

I'd like to get this, but I hesitate to because Curzon's 4K release of Memories of Murder would not play for me on any of my Blu-ray players.

Have you tried contacting them about the possibility of a faulty disc?

I did, they could not replicate my problem on their end. I tried it out on my brother's PlayStation 5 and it played fine there, but I don't have a PS5 of my own, yet.

I ended up returning my copy back to OrbitDVD. I would like to say, Curzon's representative were very thorough in helping me try to solve my problem, so I'll always remember their kindness and patience with me.

I played the same disc on three different players. It only played on one of them.

I also asked them about HDR. They told me that the production company and international licensors only produced an SDR version of the film, which is approved by Gints Zilbalodis.

Doesn't surprise me. 4K SDR is not always a bad thing, just like how upscales can benefit from HDR/DV. All depends on who is handling it and how.

For example, you see screencaps from A24's 4K of THE BRUTALIST and might be underwhelmed. But then you see the screencaps from the Universal and Elevation 4Ks and you're mesmerized.

I don't see Criterion beating that. That's a beautiful looking set, and a very nice set of extras as well. The only added incentive I could see Criterion providing is a commentary track with the director.
