Science Fiction Mission
[Show spoiler]Sci-Fi Challenge.jpg

The mission brief: you’re awakened from hypersleep when your space freighter passes through a radiation storm produced by a supernova. The storm has corrupted the programming for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) running all the ship’s systems and now it’s trying to kill you and your crew. To repair the AI’s programming you must use a backdoor attack to gain access to it's files and insert 20 lines of new code into the master database. Write these 20 lines of code by watching 20 Sci-Fi films; enter them into the AI’s master database and you’ll regain control of your ship.

Fantasy Quest
[Show spoiler]Fantasy Challenge.jpg

The tale: an evil king under the spell of a dark wizard has conquered the land, banished the use of magic, and enslaved the people to work in the crystal mines. To break the spell and return the king to his former benevolent ways so he can defeat the dark wizard, you must go on a quest to collect 20 magic talismans hidden throughout the land. Collect these magic talismans by watching 20 Fantasy films; record them in the Tome of Knowledge and you’ll break the evil spell.

Here’s an alien and wizard if you want to use them in your ratings:

The recently release Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remaster has got me in the mood for a Lord of the Rings rewatch, this thread gives me even more of an excuse!

Tough poll for me choosing between Gojira and Forbidden Planet. Not to mention The Thing from Another World and War of the Worlds as well.

I only tried the first one. Twice. Couldn't do it. Maybe I will give it another shot.

Looks like I am the only one to vote for The Blob so far. It's the film that introduced me to Steve McQueen as a kid and I've been a huge fan ever since...

Just saw the poll. Oof, tough choice. If you asked me to make a top 10 list of my favorite sci-fi movies I think almost all those would make my list.

I went with Body Snatchers as it’s the one I rewatch and enjoy the most, Forbidden Planet is a close second, but they’re all great.

Glad everyone likes the poll this year. Star Trek dominated the last two years so I had to go in another direction. I went with The Thing From Another World, an early entry in the 1950s cycle of Sci-Fi films and the closing line really set the tone for the rest of the decade: “Keep watching the skies!”

Nothing like the 50's for Science Fiction. I had a hard time making my choice. I chose an old favourite, The Day the Earth Stood Still. I think my favourite though is The Incredible Shrinking Man at lease for now but I could make a case for any of them.

Ragewar (The Dungeonmaster) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

IMDb: A demonic wizard challenges a modern-day computer programmer to a battle of technology vs. sorcery, with the programmer's girlfriend as the prize.

Pre-release and international cuts were Ragewar and U.S. theatrical cut was titled The Dungeonmaster. I watched the pre-release cut; 'cause you know...more nudity

An absolute classic that I always enjoy “I’ll Be Back”

Was really disappointed, should have focused more on the last flying Dragon type monster throughout the movie!

Jason X (2001)
UHD

In the year 2455, Jason is still alive
from the ice left behind, you will fiiiiiiind...

Yes indeed, the infamously supernatural killer of over 200 people was cryogenically frozen in mid-rampage, and 400 years later he's unfrozen by a crew of dipsh*ts. Naturally, Jason runs around a spaceship doing what he loves the most.

Yes indeed, this is the singular Friday the 13th movie set in outer space. It joins the echelon of bizarre franchise entries that takes place in space for no particular reason (a uniquely schlocky selection of fine films that also includes Leprechaun 4 and Dracula 3000, but for some f*cking reason we still don't have Machete Kills Again in Space). It's a ridiculous and stupid idea, but the film knows it. There is little pretense behind the silly story and stupid characters. Between the laid-back nature of the script, the laughably amateurish over-acting, and a few standout scenes (like the over-the-top android fight and the meta-aware holodeck scene with the memorable sleeping bag massacre), the film plays out as big dumb fun and invites you to just go with the flow of this goofy nonsense.

Strangely enough, I am intrigued by the notion of crossing the streams this way–to take a traditionally supernatural character and stick him in the element of technology and scientific progress. Jason X leverages some of the common space-movie tropes to give it the proper sci-fi backdrop: it has cryogenic freezing, super-advanced medical technology, an android chick, cool-looking guns, and other details that might seem cool and exciting but can also be seen in better media everywhere. A better script could have probably framed Jason's mere existence as a horrifying abomination against science, but real horror is clearly less of a focus. Good character building also comes up short. Like the other movies in the series, I don't really care about these dippy, overly-horny juveniles (although there are goofy shenanigans that elevates the camp value quite a bit).

Despite the camp and a few inventive kills, there are specific aspects to the film that holds it back. Part of it is the production quality. Sets, props, and costumes will have a weirdly futuristic-but-fake look that only the early 2000s could have produced. The sets are mostly metallic plastic with brightly colored buttons and some cheap CGI screens everywhere. CGI in general is liberally used but very weak. Most sound effects seem borrowed from a generic library, and I swear I've heard most of them before in other movies. The music score has a lame, unenthused quality (although I was digging the end credits music). The film overall comes across as fake-looking, schlocky, and lame. It would fall in line aptly with similarly garish movies like Ghosts of Mars and the two Doom adaptations. And yet, for the sheer lack of pretense, I find Jason X more enjoyable than any of those. If it was more colorful and more dumb, it'd be Space Truckers, but I actually favor that one over JX.

A weirdly misguided Friday the 13th entry, a lame and derivative piece of sci-fi, but it still keeps the monkey brain happy. An easy guilty pleasure, and honestly, I kinda wish the other horror icons could get the space treatment too. There is surely a universe where Meyers, Freddy, and Chucky could become astronauts before freakin' Katy Perry.
