Shudder / IFC Films will be releasing In A Violent Nature (2024) on 4K sometime this Summer. The early info I have indicates it will be a Steelbook release. I'll post more info as it comes in.

Saw this at a Scream Unseen showing last year and loads of people walked out. I liked it, though.

I liked this one until the end. Not sure what they were thinking with that. This has the only kill in a long that truly turned my stomach.

Ah yes, another "We'll put out a blu-ray only then squeek out a 4K less than a year later".
This has grown so tiresome, and why I refuse to buy blu-rays for films from "studio" releases that hve the potential for a 4K. This is beyond insulting to the customer-base that is keeping physical media alive. That said, I did not like this movie at all. |

I think the story (besides being pretty lame) being told largely from the perspective of the killer, while a neat concept on paper, really drags this movie down. Weak movies like this always come off as highlight reels for the FX person/persons involved. Anyone who hasn’t seen this, fast forward to the kills….you’re welcome.

Absolutely awesome looking steelbook. Enjoyed the movie when I saw it, but I'm a gore fiend. The kills are what I liked most. Otherwise, it was just a lot of walking through forestry...and I do mean a LOT of walking. Not sure I enjoyed it enough to grab this.

I loved this, the slasher equivalent of an ambient album.
My biggest beef with this movie was the insufferable victims with terrible dialogue. So close to perfect otherwise. |

I'm with you. The ambience of this film is fantastic. I actually enjoyed the walking/sounds of nature between action moments. I still consider this a better Friday the 13th film than Friday 8, 9, X. Here's to hoping Shudder adds HDR to this release as I have a hard time upgrading when it's just a resolution boost alone. That said, this is one I'm sure I'll end up picking up eventually.

I hated this movie so much that I wanted to stop in just to discourage people from buying it without renting first. This film delivers on its premise perfectly (what if a Friday the 13th movie followed Jason for the duration rather than his victims), but it's proof positive that a film can deliver on its premise and still be completely, utterly, tedious. If you enjoy watching a voiceless, characterless, Jason stand-in's back while he wanders through the woods for minutes on end in long tracking shots, interspersed with occasional, clinical, killings that are completely devoid of tension or any reason to care, followed by a pointless 15 minute ending sequence of characters driving in a car that desperately tries and fails to assign meaning to everything that came before in a hamfisted way......this is your movie.

Really surprised at the negative reactions here. Maybe I'm more inclined to films of a more ambient nature that some may find tedious - from Rollin to Kiorastami to Tarr and Tarkovsky - but I found this movie to be suspenseful, compelling, shocking, even hilarious. That is, for me at least, not in the slightest bit tedious and overall pretty good.
I love a film that smash-cuts from one scene to the next and gains momentum as it goes, but I don't require that and I found the different approach here opened-up the otherwise fairly hide-bound formula of the slasher film. The stalking-the-woods scenes could absolutely be tedious for some and oddly felt like those unnervingly serene Terrance Malick nature scenes, and for me were quite effective as slow-burn suspense builders and welcome counterparts to the typical teens-fooling-around scenes that usually go here. The kills were extraordinarily inventive, far far beyond the typical slasher fare, and I appreciated that the humor was neither arch nor ironic, never descending into some kind of false, forced camp. I thought the somewhat controversial final scene rather brilliantly toyed with audience expectations of an out-of-nowhere jump scare finale while simultaneously reflecting what we presume will be the enduring trauma of the final girl. My mind went to the ending of TX Chain Saw Massacre and how it may have similarly played out if allowed to extend. Eh, give it a shot. I mean, this could at least work as a quick palate cleanser between those belovedly amateurish, slasher-adjacent flicks from VS. ![]() |

I really like this movie. I agree with the comment about it being like am ambient album. It's slow, quiet but engaging and hypnotic. I also love the practical effects. Some which I have no idea how they pulled off.
I will agree that the victims are some of the most obnoxious characters I've seen since Friday the 13th. You are rooting for Johnny. One of my pet peeves in horror is unlikable victims. To me, you should be rooting for the victims, not the killer. All of that said, it's well made and unique. I thought the Blu-ray begged for HDR with all of the pretty scenery so I'm definitely in for a double dip. I wish it wasn't steelbook only but that seems to be the way things are going nowadays. They think everyone that buys physical media only buy it for steelbooks. |
