United Kingdom Nosferatu the Vampyre 4K UHD (BFI) (1979)

BFI is releasing Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) on September 22nd, 2025

Amazon UK - HMV - Rarewaves - Zavvi

Diabolik DVD - Orbit DVD - Atomic Movie Store

Quote:
Reconnecting German cinema with its Weimer forebears via Murnau’s iconic Nosferatu (1922), Herzog’s vampire film references its predecessor but has a distinctive temperament. Dracula, played by the stunning Klaus Kinski, is modelled on the monster of the earlier film, yet his obsession with Isabelle Adjani’s character of Lucy Harker reveals a certain pathos, even as his army of rats wreck plague and delirium on a prosperous small town.

Herzog's images and Popul Vuh's music combine to create a darkly hypnotic and seductive experience.

Extras

4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)
Feature-length audio commentary with Werner Herzog
On-set documentary (1979, 13 mins): promotional film featuring candid interviews with Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski
Original theatrical trailer
Stills gallery
Original mono audio (German and English)
Alternative 5.1 Surround audio (German)
Other extras tbc

Hopefully Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo aren’t too far behind.

In for that one! Would rather take a 4k boxset over single releases tho.

My favorite Herzog (and favorite vampire movie), bar none. I might bite if it's a huge improvement over the BFI Blu-ray from the box set.

Don't think so, but with the August announcements yesterday, it may have been pushed out a little farther than "summer".

This is the last confirmation I could find in the Shout thread from their insider. It was posted in March.

So far only two 4K restorations exists, presumably Aguirre and Nosferatu.

Ben Stoddart posted on FB that it is a situation like the one with Kurosawa, where they have to wait and see which film the rightsholders restore next.

Sounds to me like the rightsholders or on it, but it may take some time.

I am fine with a slow drip of Herzog in 4K, though. Gives me something to look forward to. I'll definitely get them all.

I thought at least "Fitzcarraldo" and "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" had also 4k Scans done.

I'd be happy with the arguably most visual - Nosferatu, Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo on 4K (The BFI's deluxe LE format would very much suit each of them) and just keep the BD boxset for the rest, as the HD transfers aren't bad at all.

I wouldn't turn down some of the others either, but don't have any real urge to have them all in 4K.
