What is this about Blu-ray must be upgraded? - Blu-ray Forum

First off, I love my Blu-ray player. However, I have one concern. A current article on msnbc.com said to wait to purchase a Blu-Ray because most versions are only version 1.0 and have to be upgraded as Blu-Ray dvds come out. The article states that you will end up having to purchase a new Blu-Ray player next year because of this. Could anyone shed light on this subject for me?

They are referring to Profile 2.0 coming out soon. This new version will implement new features such as Picture-in-Picture commentary.

From what I've heard, the first generation BD players will not support this. The PS3 and future players though will.

Hello Eric welcome to the forums. They are talking about players that will be profile 2.0. This does not mean that the current 1.0 and 1.1 players won't work, they won't be able to access certain features. The PS3 and the Panasonic BD-30 and soon BD-50 will have those 2.0 features. Sony recently announced players that will be profile 2.0 coming out soon. Do you currently have a player? If not I suggest either a PS3 or the Panny or Sony if you want all the interactive features. It should be noted that profile 1.1 is usuable on the Panny BD-30 and the PS3, and Resident Evil: Extinction, and War currently offer PiP and more are on the way.

All depends if you really care about extras. A lot of people don't and they make is sound like your blu-ray player will be useless in a year. It wont be you will still have a ability to play any movie.

As others have mentioned, what they're referring to are the profiles. However, your player should still be able to play all the BD movies that come out. What you won't be able to see are the PiP features of profile 1.1 and the BD Live/Internet content of 2.0.

Personally, I rarely watch the extra features on a disc, so these don't matter too much to me. (Though, I do have a PS3 that is 1.1 now and will be 2.0 when that upgrade comes out for it.) What matters the most is the movie and the sound, which your player should still be able to play.

2.0 is just features. All Blu-ray players will be able to play profile 2.0 Blu-ray movies.

The profiles are THE most over exaggerated garbage that HD DVD fanatics spewed.

It's this simple...

1.1 adds in-movie PiP. "Standard" picture in picture seen on current DVDs is still possible for every player.

2.0 adds 1.1 and online access for web based features, but requires a broadband connection (i.e. you have to connect the player via ethernet).

These features (in-movie PiP and online) are optional features for studios.

All Blu-ray players will play all Blu-ray movies and the vast majority of features, period. There may be some issues with a handful of titles, but nothing I imagine a firmware update will fix.

The HD DVD crazies would go on and on about Blu players being obsolete or the format is incomplete...all nonsense.

I would just like to add that the information in this thread has even expanded my knowledge of this whole situation. Before I was very unaware of what the big fuss was about the different proflies was, and this has made me realize that there isn't any need for a ''big fuss' with this issue.

Nice catch, my mistake. I SHOULD have said the Panny BD-30 is 1.1 ready.

A recent example of what happens when your player doesn't support the particular feature is Saw IV. It's a BD-Live title so it requires internet access for a feature called MoLog (an interactive movie blog). The PS3 is currently just profile 1.1 (bonus-view) compatible. So, I can see the feature on the disc, play around in the menu, etc. but I can't actually access the internet to use the blog yet (i.e. can't use the feature, just see it's there).

What's funny is that with 1.1 titles like Sunshine which has PiP I actually preferred to watch that footage byitself at full screen vs the PiP even though I have a compatible player. For one thing it was only 17 minutes total so it only would pop up once in awhile during the movie. I wish Resident Evil 3 allowed us to watch the footage seperately instead only as a 1/32 size PiP window.

This is not as absolute as you present it. BD30 has an SD slot which (in theory) can be outfitted with SD Wi-Fi card, thus making the player 2.0 compliant with just a firmware upgrade.

I am still using a profile 1.0 Pioneer player and it works great, the picture is awesome and I hardly has any problem with any new disk I put in. If you don't care about bonus view (PIP) and have an ethernet connection to the internet than profile 1.1 and 2.0 is meaningless. Profile 1.0 or 1.1 player does not stop working when 2.0 comes out. The guy who wrote the article don't know jack. My highest pirority is top quality picture and sound and 1.0 has given me that already except DTS HD master audio. Maybe later this year or next when a whole bunch of profile 2.0 player comes out I will upgrade to a high end player but I doubt I will ever hook up the ethernet port.

Like my cel phone it does everything but I don't use half of the features in it.

That won't happen, the device simply isn't designed for it

To boot, you still need 1GB of storage to be compliant

The question is if the SD controller in the player can support I/O. If it does then a simple (and I do mean simple) firmware upgrade is all that is needed. Another, and probably more important question is if there will be enough consumer interest in this upgrade to justify Panasonic's investment in it.
