USA The Rage: Carrie 2 4K UHD (1999) Vinegar Syndrome

Quote:
This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Jillian Adel) is limited to 8,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Welcome to Bates High School. Today’s lesson: stay on Rachel Lang’s good side, because if you don’t, there will be hellfire to pay! When a group of competitive, oversexed jocks target Rachel as a snitch, it triggers Rachel’s psychic impulse for revenge. While mourning the suicide of her best friend, her rage boils to a fever pitch and Rachel finds herself struggling with her inherited telekinetic powers. Can guidance counselor Sue Snell, survivor of Carrie White's original bloodbath, manage to help Rachel before it's too late? Is there any way to save Rachel from her own supernatural fury or is it destined to destroy her alongside her teenage tormentors?

A chilling sequel from acclaimed cult filmmaker Katt Shea (Stripped to Kill, Streets), THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 stars Emily Bergl (TV's Shameless) along with Jason London (Dazed and Confused), Dylan Bruno (Saving Private Ryan), Zachery Ty Bryan (TV's Home Improvement) and also features Academy Award® nominee Amy Irving (Carrie, The Fury) reprising her role of Sue Snell. Vinegar Syndrome presents this late 90s horror sleeper, which Variety called “an explosion of supernatural violence” on 4K UHD for the very first time, exclusively restored from its original camera negative.

directed by: Katt Shea

Haven't seen this since I was a kid. Didn't care much for it at the time but I've long been meaning to revisit it.

Wonder if they'll include the uncut commentary this go-round since originally it was edited to remove any disparaging comments about MGM IIRC.

Doubt it. MGM are still fussy when it comes to that sorta thing.

The ending is bonkers. Nowhere near as good as the original, but worth it for that ending alone imo.

Wonder if it will have that usual Vinegar Syndrome color push though. It almost seems like they’re using a DCI P3 color space and then expanding it/encoding it to Rec.2020 in all their 4K/HDR releases.

Oh yes, this destroys that horrid remake with Chloe Boring Moretz in every single department.
Apparently VS is not bringing anything new in the extras department?

1. Pretty sure this was MGM's last laserdisc ever. You'd think after Gone With The Wind moved 600 units they would've killed the format.

2. Never seen the remake, but Chloe Moretz has always been a 10 for me. I grew up with Diary Of A Wimpy Kid (okay movie) and Kick-Ass 1 and 2, so pretty much nothing could sully her in my eyes. Even if it's a remake of Carrie that blows.

On its own terms, I've always liked The Rage for daring to be earnest, without teetering into maudlin. It's not master stylist material--De Palma has that take covered for the ages--but the formula works again, thanks to a nasty new hazing and clique dynamic. Most important for a Carrie themed film, it does cruelty brutally right, ensuring the climax is chock full o' telekinetic fury. Emily Bergl has just the right blend of being sympathetic, with a side of fury...err, Rage... Caps at Vinegar Syndrome look great.

This is one thing I cannot recall one example of having ever happened. Once a commentary is cut, it stays cut. If anyone can think of one, please share the info. Hell, if Arrow couldn't restore the commentary for The Thing which was cut for silly shit, no way is anyone restoring one that bashes a studio or exec.

Wasn't the commentary for The Thing uncut on the 4K? I seem to remember hearing they restored it there.

I've always liked this one. It's got a cool edge to it. I like how the main character isn't just some spinless victim, but somewhat empowered to defend herself. It fits in with the other late 90s/early 2000s teen horror-thrillers of the time. So if you like that era of films you'll likely find some enjoyment out of The Rage. I have the Shout Factory double feature with the Carrie TV movie. Not sure I need a 4K for it, but glad that it's at least back in print.

As a huge fan of the original, I also love this one, but mostly on its own merits. As a Carrie sequel, it kinda sucks. As its own movie, it’s very solid and tells a very grounded story that I think was ahead of its time in dealing with #MeToo themes like toxic masculinity, teen sexual harassment, and revenge porn. I also think that Rachel was more relatable as an invisible outsider, and not so much an openly bullied character that everyone picked on for no reason. If you approach this as more of a teen drama with mild supernatural elements, as opposed to a horror sequel, it works.

Also, I may be biased because she was one of my acting conches, but Katt Shea is highly underrated as a filmmaker, and Hollywood let her down after this movie bombed. I know she’s not interested in horror anymore, but she needs another opportunity to do something interesting behind the camera.

And this was filmed not super far from my hometown. The film’s extras casting director (Erica Arvold) is even someone whose company cast me a lot. I geeked out when I asked her about working on this movie. Haha

I wish there were new extras (an interview with Emily Bergl would be nice because she’s really great in this), but I’m happy this isn’t being ignored anymore. I’m not holding my breath, but it would be nice if MGM would let the uncensored commentary be released. It’s only blanked out in a couple places though, and it’s a highly insightful listen regardless. I actually learned a lot about certain aspects of the film industry.

I've been a fan of this film since I was an adolescent and still enjoy it. I'll pick this up eventually, but I'm not dying to get it, especially since I have the Scream Factory Blu-ray and this edition doesn't appear to have any new bonus features. Still will upgrade though for the 4K eventually, though probably once it hits its general street date. I can do without the exclusive slipcover.
