Thumbs down Bored of the social/casual games and community/user content

I bought the PS1, then PS2, then PS3 for games. Having the graphics and animation evolve was a blast. Now when I hear "next gen is about community and social games" I get angry.
So the Wii sells well : they decided to target the "casual gamers" and do games with lots of fun but not technological advances. I pity the people who bought it. It only means the games are underdeveloped (see the lots of **** released on Wii - the "official Nintendo QUALITY seal has become the official Nintendo seal ...).
So let casual gamers have fun with the Wii 2 hours every week and maintain overall quality for gamers who spend money on games they want to play to the fullest!
And the community/user content thing??? Some people still don't have internet, some have low speed connexion, those can't even imagine being part of any community. I buy games to have fun and get out of everyday life, if I want to interact with people I use my phone or meet friends (I use MSN for friends abroad). Games that allow user content are still a little minority and much more a PC thing.
Why make gamers believe a minor trend is now an obligation in gaming? Can't we have fun with Ratchet and Clank, DMC4 or Motorstorm, COD4 offline? Why the need to be better than Microcrap? They're just lazy developers selling unfinished products to make faster money, it would be new if they had a breakthrough idea for everyone to enjoy! So don't copy them with user content/community/internet bullcrap! And let Playstation be a playground with games for everyone and every genre as usual ; don't try to make gamers become casual, I find that insulting!

I think I get the jisp of what he is saying.

He is afraid that Sony will start concentrating on casual gamers instead of hardcore gamers, and worrys of being left with nothing to play but poorly crafted casual games that are poorly created and poorly executed.

He sees that casual games tend to be very lazily created with features removed to make them simpler to a casual gamer, and worry's what future this will lead us to where company's only make casual games because they feel they will get more money and they will not have to focus so many resources to make them.

The op listed some references to the wii with its casual gamer outlook, and how this is a travesty for it which might not be so immediately apparent.

He continues with some anxiety of user content and how the Op believes it should remain on the PC.

That will be my attempt of understanding the ops post. I have mixed feelings on the subject so im just going to wait and see what other people say.

I'm pickin up what you're puttin' down.

I can't wait for MGS4 . . . hours of enjoyment, holed up by myself I, too, find it frustrating that there aren't many big games anymore that are great for their single player experience. While COD4 is awesome online, the campaign hasn't evolved much.

I just started replaying all the Metal Gear Solid games and realized how much I miss games like that that have great gameplay, a great story, and don't rely on online to keep it exciting. It's like everybody is making games for people with ADD. I wonder if a game like Final Fantasy 7 would be as popular today as it was when it was originally released . . . it just seems that people aren't as attracted to such a time-consuming endeavor.

dk3dknight quite summed it up, I fear Sony's following Nintendo's "casual" trend and Microcrap's "we're the best for internet and community" trend. I just want Playstation to remain the best at offering multiple genres and new ideas (such as incredible controllers like dance mat, eyetoy).

Remember that the Dance mat leads to Dance Dance Revolution, Dance Dance Revolution leads to continuous spin offs with no improvement, which leads to eternal damnation, and enternal damnation leads to firey place where everyone there plays ddr 24/7..

(If you watched arphenhouse that would make sense)
(If you haven't watched arphenhouse don't... your mind will bleed)\

Now back to topic, I am going to hope that the devs do not wash our pallets which too much casual, I understand if they want to make a few to bring some folks to the fold, I worry about games getting watered down to appease others.

Through I have no problem with user created content such as that for UT3 bring me more snarf weapons.

I just see it as an 'addition'. It's not like its hurting or delaying the good games from coming out, as far as I can tell anyway. My big games are there when I need them. And when I need a break with some mindless entertainment, the little games are there. As long as one doesnt start to effect the other, I'm happy.

I equate it to television, like this: I can watch Lost or Heroes and really immerse myself in them. Alternately, if I want to veg out and not think, there's the Road Runner, Tom & Jerry, and Bugs Bunny.

Looking at the SCE WWS and Sony published lineup, I don't think they can be accused of only catering to one side. From Buzz and SingStar to Gran Turismo 5 slap bang in the middle to Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Team Ico's new game and a whole bunch more. Fantastic variety, this is how you break the 60million consoles sold barrier without launching at under $200.

Good post, but maybe a little extreme. Games do need to have a longer single player experience. RPG's are my favorite because of this reason.

The ADD age of games is upon us!!!

ICO's project should be prettttttyyyyyyy
Shadow of the Colossus 2 (me hopes!!)
