United Kingdom Capricorn One / Eagle Has Landed on BD

I see from the Amazon.co.uk site that "Capricorn One" and "The Eagle Has Landed" are available in England on Blu-ray. DVD Talk even has a review of "Capricorn One" at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=32412
I've enjoyed both of these films and would love to have them on BD. Does anyone know if they will be released here in the U.S.

Capricorn 1 does not bear any region code information on it, so being a catalogue item I would say that it is region free... so you could import it.

There are no extras with this disc, but the PQ is pretty good for a movie of it's period and budget. The case does have an error... it reports the aspect ratio at 4:3... don't worry it's displayed in scope.

This link indicates that it's Region 2 which makes no sense:

http://www.choicesuk.com/Product.aspx/!694049

Blu-rays are Region A, B and C, right?

Correct... I suspect the title may be region free (like Paramount & Warner Bros) as there is no region code printed on it. Beware though that the packaging is inaccurate (see above).

I just imported it and watched it tonight. 100% region free! The movie looks fantastic in BD. The aspect ratio is 2.35:1 and the running time is 123 min.

Here's a review from DVDtalk.com

I just watched The Eagle Has Landed on BD. It is obviously compatible with Region A players.

I thought the PQ was very good for a film of its age. There are a few scratches in the film (only 2 or 3) but overall the color and detail is quite good. Film grain is present and is light in nature, giving a nice image. I hate it when catalog titles are smeared with DNR.

The sound is monoural, but it is in good condition and the dialog is easy to understand. There are no bonus features, just optional English subtitles.

They probably will be released anyday now cause I couldn't care less about these movies. And lately lots of movies, that I don't care about, are released on BD.
And I mean this in the nicest way possible.

Capricorn One is a nice BD, but missing the extra features that were on the previous DVD versions (trailers for the US DVD and a making of featurette and trailer for the UK DVD).

Lionsgate is re-releasing a DVD version of Capricorn One. It could very well end up being released domestically on Blu-ray as well. I am gonna wait awhile before I pull the trigger on the import. However, for those of you interested, "Escape to Athena," "The Eagle Has Landed," "Great Expectations" and "The Boys From Brazil" are all region-free imports from ITV.

I purchased both "Capricorn One" and "The Eagle Has Landed" from Xploited. I'll be buying "The Boys From Brazil" soon. And I do CARE ABOUT these films being released on Blu-Ray, as catalog titles are my MAIN objective in collecting.

The Eagle Has Landed: not real Blu Ray quality

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have scanned through the Blu Ray I just received. It does indeed play in U.S. Blu-Ray players. But I totally disagree with 2 other posters: it has a fine visual quality for an ordinary dvd, but NOWHERE near normal Blu-Ray quality. I looked at it on a 60 inch Pioneer Elite plasma with a PS 3 Blu Ray player. In comparison, Dirty Harry (an older film), let alone the best of the Blu Ray dvds in visual quality, The Searchers, are miles away better. If you have the regular dvd, I believe you will find the quality equal.

I have Capricorn One. The PQ is the best I've ever seen however the AQ leaves something to be desired. Lionsgate released a special edition with extras on DVD only. According to the Digital Bits Lionsgate has no immediate plans to release a region 1 BD anytime soon which is why I picked up the ITV disc:

This isn't a disappointing disc at all. The transfer does look slightly softer than it probably should but overall it is nowhere near close to the old DVD release (especially if you blow it through a digital projector). As far as I am concerned, it is a typical ITV Granada release.

Rewatched TEHL last night. It is actually a very entertaining nights viewing with a strong cast and plausible storyline.
The blueray disc, whilst not up in the reference quality stakes,is certainly the best this film is ever likely to see and certainly is a definite step up to any of the dvd editions previously released.
Picture quality is rather variable but did'nt detract from my viewing enjoyment.Audio is restricted to a bog standard mono, remixed to stereo recording and whilst it would have been nice to have a newly mixed audio track, both Lalo Schiffrens music score and speech come across clearly.
Downside of this ITV release is the complete lack of extras on the disc. Not even a theatrical trailer to be seen.
I actually have a bit of a fondness for this often neglected film and anyone who has not seen it or is thinking of upgrading should'nt be disappointed.

looks like all the old ITV releases from 2008 may be OOP/deleted now.
I looked at the ITV shop online, and the bd versions don't even show up from what I can tell.
(Henry V, Shawshank, hamlet, Eagle Has landed, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, etc.)
some of them all only available through sellers on amazon.uk now.
I'm really worried that ITV has bailed on blu-ray as far as releasing anymore older films.

I would love to upgrade Capricorn One to Blu-ray as it is one of my favorite films. However, unless it gets a 2.35:1 anamorphic picture with lossless 5.1 audio I will keep hold of my DVD copy I got from Amsterdam back in 2005.

I read somewhere that the US had 5.1 on their old DVD version sometime back so that should at least be featured here and not 2.0 or 4.0.

Come on ITV or let Lionsgate do something magic with it if you can't or won't.
