USA Ghosts of Hiroshima 3D (in development) James Cameron

James Cameron has been talking about making this movie for almost a year now, but he only revealed this week that he intends to make it in 3D.

He does have a lot on his plate, as he also wants to direct two more Avatar movies. But he does seem very passionate about the project

The whole interview with Discussing Film is here.

He's been passionate about this film for a while - he even interviewed one of the survivors. I'm glad he hasn't forgotten about this project.

This will be difficult to bear. This will be a 3D memorial to history.

This probably belongs in the news section given that it hasn't even started filming and all he's doing is talking about it. Directors don't always end up making the films they talk about making. If he wants to do it like you were really there it will mostly have to be in Japanese and given the sensitivities it's a hugely complex time-consuming project when you have also time-consuming Avatar sequels to pump out. But there's the potential for this to be much more effective than Oppenheimer, I hope he gets around to it one day.

I don't even think the script is written lol.

it's just the usual Blub blubbing around, spamming up every forum it can with pointless new threads. Par for the course. Wake me up when this actually goes into production.

I very much doubt a word has been written, Cameron has simply stated that he will be directing it, but I suspect there won't be much new to say about it for a long time...

This is literally the next movie he’s directing, he said that in the interview. The next Avatar (after this year’s) isn’t scheduled for release until 2029.

This one could be out late next year or in 2027 at the latest.

I don’t know about you guys, but the thought of James Cameron making a new, original film that’s also gonna be in 3D seems pretty exciting to me.

Also, I think you can get a sense from the book’s trailer how amazing this could be… “colors so new that they couldn’t be named”?

I think we could be in for one of the most amazing movies Cameron has ever directed.

James Cameron hasn't made any non-Avatar movies in the last 25 years so if he gets around to doing one in 3D then yes that's exciting but I guess all the years of him promoting dire Terminator sequels have led to people being less excited by things he says than they used to be.

I think it’s clear he wants to make a “serious” movie that might get him some recognition from the Academy. Not saying it’s his only motivation, but he’s already got all the money in the world so maybe he’s craving more accolades from his peers.

I’m pretty sure this could become Cameron’s “Schinlder’s List”

It is definitely not a documentary, as it is a movie adaptation of the Charles Pellegrino book.

Cameron has promised that he will make you feel what it was like to be there when the atomic bombs went off.

Well that's going to be powerful. I guess what a lot of people think Oppenheimer should have done.

Would make an interesting pairing with Stalingrad which I was lucky to see in IMAX 3D

I never understood that. Not what you said, but the fact that people (including Cameron himself) said that Oppenheimer should have shown the destruction of the bombs when the movie is very clearly told from only 2 perspectives: Oppenheimer's and Strauss. The script is even written in first person. So the very structure of the story wouldn't allow for the showing of the aftermath of the bomb as neither Oppenheimer nor Strauss were there to witness it.

As for Cameron, why would he have wanted Oppenheimer to tackle that aspect anyway? Had Nolan done that, there would be no need for his movie as it would be too soon to rehash the same material and as great as Cameron is, it would be compared probably unfavorably to anything in Oppenheimer

We could have had him watch footage of the aftermath I suppose and been absorbed into that even if it's creative license. I can understand the criticism, but also why Nolan didn't want to do that. Fortunately we're going to get this treatment properly now.
