Quote:
One of the masterworks of 1960s cinema, La Notte (The Night) marked yet another development in the continuous stylistic evolution of its director, Michelangelo Antonioni — even as it solidified his reputation as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. La Notte is Antonioni’s Twilight of the Gods, but composed in cinematic terms. Observed from a crane-shot, it’s a sprawling study of Italy’s upper middle-class; seen in close-up, it’s an x-ray of a relationship on the brink of collapse.
Two of the giants of film acting come together as a married couple living in crisis: Marcello Mastroianni (La dolce vita, 8 1/2) and Jeanne Moreau (Jules et Jim, Bay of Angels). He is a renowned author and “public intellectual”; she is “the wife.” Over the course of one day and the night into which it inevitably bleeds, the pair will come to re-examine their emotional bonds and grapple with the question of whether love and communication are even possible in a world built out of profligate idylls and sexual hysteria.

Photographed in rapturous black-and-white by the great Gianni di Venanzo (8 1/2, Giulietta degli spiriti), La Notte is a film about the yawning caverns that can open up between people who were once in love, and the difficulty of trying to fix something that may be irrevocably broken. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Michelangelo Antonioni’s haunted odyssey for the first time anywhere in the world on 4K UHD.

Oh, this is really exciting. Definitely a must own.

I wonder (and hope) that L’eclisse and L'avventura won’t be too far behind if this sells well…

This is the first Antonioni to make it to 4K too if I'm not mistaken.

And, hot take, my favorite of his (somewhat overrated) early 60s trilogy. Can’t wait for this! And where are Blow Up and The Passenger?

OMG. Now we’re getting the real goodies. Most amazing news. Love Antonioni’s films but I would’ve never thought that they’d end up in 4K.

The trailer embedded in the OP is set to auto-dub by default, so you'll need to set it to the original language track to hear it properly. I contracted Eureka to try and fix this.

edit: Now fixed

My favorite Antonioni film. I love films that are "a day in the life of" and where the setting plays a main character. I pretty much just went through what this film depicts with my ex. Its kinda mind boggling that Mastroianni and Moreau were both dissatisfied with the film.

“Nobody knows anything” doesn’t just apply to Hollywood or producers

I gotta watch my blu-ray now, see if I like it enough to upgrade

Love the pfp btw

pre-ordered at ATOMIC

I think Fidelity In Motion work with Eureka so this should be very nice.

L'Eclisse & Blow Up are my favorite Antonioni.

The more Monica Vitti on 4K the better.

Definitely getting this one. Actually my third favourite of the 'trilogy', but still very good. Another Blu-ray I can replace.

Hoping for The Passenger on 4K soon, too.

About time we got some Antonioni on 4K. Way overdue. Wouldn't surprise me if Criterion makes an announcement sometime soon.

Would gladly pick this up (along with his other films like Red Desert, L'Eclisse, L'Avventura, Blow-Up and The Passenger).

Thanks for this. Because of the looming uncertainty, I checked Atomic and they are significantly cheaper than Eureka, anyway. Eureka seems to have lowered their new US shipping charge from £10 to £6, but if you order La notte with the Blu-ray of Shogun's Samurai, the total is US $52.98, which is enough for the $50 free shipping threshold, whereas the same order at Eureka is £41.98 + £6.00 and £47.98 (now charged upfront) is currently $64.42. I guess Eureka always sells at RRP, but I'm still surprised that Atomic can swing a lower price, let alone a competitive one, since I'm sure they're a small outfit, but we'll see how it goes, I guess. I know I've seen many posts praising them.

I'm particularly excited for the Tony Rayns extras across both discs.

This was an easy preorder. I just hope Criterion doesn't miraculously find a way to top this the way they did all those FiM-encoded BFI UHDs.

I presume L'Avventura would likely get a newer master that premiers at Cannes Classics or something before we see a UHD of that one, and the current 4K master of Red Desert is allegedly quite problematic in terms of color grading.

L'Eclisse and The Passenger don't have 4K restorations yet, as far as I know.
