Default Codecs

So here is the question. If I download, say the "Codec Pack All in 1" onto the PS3, will it then be able to decode and play AVI's and X-vid movies? I don't think the PS3 can play AVI's by itself, can it?

wouldn't work, the PS3 has a different type of computer structure than a PC. There would have to be a plugin developed for the PS3 and there isn't at the moment.

It plays .mp4, DiVX and i think thats it.

No worries. What are you trying to do anyhow? All you need to do is convert something to .mp4, its pretty easy.

I have several files that are in AVI. I don't know, however, the first thing about converting files. Sounds complicated. My PC is ancient and won't play anything excepy mpeg, wmv, and mpeg 2 files. Even if I donwload the codec pack, it won't play the other files.

I was hoping that the PS3 would have something more to offer.

it will play an AVI file if its a DiVX AVI file, AVI is actually just a container for lots of different file types.

How do you know what type of AVI file it is you need to play? Will it say? I had no idea that AVI was just a container. It's all a bit greek too me.

I know it is strange. I'm not sure about windows is there a properties option in the media player? or an info button? i know in quicktime theres a movie inspector which tells me what it is.
