Can the 40G PS3 use any usb hub to expand the ports?

Yes, although I would get one that has it's own power source in case you are playing Rockband. The drums may not work without. I am using a cheep Best Buy Dynex one.

I suspect the only reason the EYE didn't work is the age of the hub. Being that old it's probably USB 1.x and does not support USB 2.x hi-speed. Other i/o devices(guitars, drums, keyboard, etc.) would not need the higher BW of hi-speed 2.0.

Just a hunch...

So maybe the answer is "yes, any hub, but USB 2.x is recommended"
