Default Fingerprint on New BD... WTH??

I received a copy of Blade Runner from Amazon yesterday. When I opened the sealed copy and noticed the 5th disc was out of the holder and an obvious fingerpint mark was on the surface. It played fine but it wasn't a happy experience at all. I've never experienced this kind of problem (fingerprint mark) before with my hundreds CDs, DVDs, etc.

I've heard some packaging problems with Warner but this seems like a different issue. Warner has some quality control problems or what?

My initial guess, is that Amazon may have repackaged a defective return [hd-dvd screw ups], and didn't clean up.

I got one like this from Amazon, too. I've seen this reported before in this forum, as well.

I've gotten a couple discs like that as well. I dunno. As long as it plays I wouldn't worry about it.

My copy from Amazon was also full of fingerprints but the case was properly shrink wrapped. It did play properly but why would someone (either Warner or Amazon) handle a disc this way?

I've had this happen before, wasnt too big a deal though.

The worst is when you open up a completely brand new factory shrink wrapped case only to find ... NO DISC!

Talk about a hard return, they dont believe you for nuthin.

Because of this whenever I pick up a blu or even dvds when I used to buy those, if it just feels oddly light or I cant hear the disc, I'll buy it and then usually open it right when I walk out just so Im not trying to do the return a day later or something.

i thought my "Assassination of Jesse james" was empty, just hella light.

I agree. As I did not check for fingerprints, I did notice it was out of the holder (disc 5.) I believe it was that mis-packaging issue from about a month or so ago. I wouldn't worry unless it's scratched or unplayable.

Just like a lot of disney celebrities..

I have that happened to me too, I suppose Amazon has plenty of shrink wrap machines. The black market is filled with shrink wrap machines too.
The one that that is hard to fake is the clam shells, and I think that is why manufacturers use it.

When I purchased Babel a while back I got home and to my surprise I found a blank DVD! I just returned it and got a new one, no worries there.

That is quite odd... Warner packaging people are supposed to be wearing gloves when they do quality controls... so who knows, maybe someone over there messed up or it really happened at Amazon, I am pretty sure they have standard shrink wrap machines for merchandise that is being returned, yet not defective.
As long as it plays it all good, but I would be a little pissed as you never know what was done to the discs!?

This almost HAS to be due to the disc 5 problem, no? Odd they would smudge up the disc, though.

http://www.amazon.com/Runner-Five-Di...4055517&sr=1-1

"NOTE: A small number of Blade Runner 5-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition briefcase gift sets and Blade Runner 5-Disc Complete Collector's Editions in the Blu-ray format may contain an incorrect disc #5 labeled The Work Print. In some cases disc #5 does not have the work print content but rather the content of Blade Runner: The Final Cut, which is already included in the collector's set as disc #1. The only way to recognize the error is to play disc #5 and go to the Special Features page. If you see one commentary track by Paul M. Sammon, the disc is correct. If you see three commentary tracks, then they have an incorrect disc. To receive a correct replacement Blu-ray disc #5, please call Warner Home Video at 1-800-553-6937."

I agree with you on that, that it might be from the HDDVD screw up. i remember when that was a headache. it was a very hectic month for WB.

I bought Curse of the Golden Flower on release day last May from Best Buy. Got home, opened it up, checked the disc out. There was a hugh finger print (thumb) on the disc . Clearly a screw up in QC because the security stickers (3 of them) were in tact. It wipped off easy and the movie worked fine, so I let it go. Thank you hard protective blu-ray coating.

This has happened with Amazon preorders, so I don't think it's repackaging. Even if the packers are wearing white cotton gloves, if the facility is hot (sweaty) or if they are in the North in the winter (using lots and lots of lotion) then fingerprints are inevitable. They should still hold the disks appropriately, though.

Have someone ID the fingerprint... who knows, that may reveal the source as working for Warner, Amazon... maybe Toshiba

It is amazingly easy to shrink wrap something. Anyone can do it with a hair dryer. Seriously though, when i bought a used game as a gift to my brother years ago, they shrink wrapped it for me right there so it looked new. I would be surprised if Amazon wouldn't do the same.
As long as it plays, there should be no issues, just clean it off and ignore it.
