Default Harman Kardon

Alright Im new to blu-ray and audio. I bought a Hk247 and a Ps3. I dont know if i just dont have this thing set up right or what. When im watching a movie either on dvd or blu-ray sometimes the speech will just cut out all together, sometimes sound fx will still be there but normally it just seems to go mute. One time i was playing Cod4 and when the receiver was on pcm, the shooting or the noise was coming out of the wrong speakers. Example explosions in front of me were coming from behind. I changed it to use dolby digital and everything was fine. Sometimes i can make it through whole movies and sometimes i can barely start a movie. I have Superbad on blu-ray and have yet to make it all the way through the movie. I tried different hdmi cables so it isnt that. I even returned my ps3 and tried a new one. The last thing to do is exchange the receiver but i will end up with the same model. Has anyone heard of this happening before?

I've got the same set-up Do you have the HDMI hooked from the PS3 to the Receiver, then the Receiver to the T.V. If you do then that might be the problem. I had a issue where I would turn the PS3 on first then the Receiver and I would have sound but no picture. I know your issue is a little different but I ended up hooking my optical sound back up and hooking the HDMI from the PS3 to the T.V. No problems now.

I talked to someone there and was no help. He just told me that because i was doing pcm i wasnt letting the receiver doing the processing and thats the problem. He said switch the ps3 to bitstream to get dolby digital. Well from what i know unless i misunderstand pcm is suppost to sound better than dd. Am i right or wrong? I felt like he was pretty much telling me the receiver was in-capable of doing pcm. I guess ill try and hope to get someone else. He cut me off and made me feel stupid.

The other reason I hooked it back up was because the PCM was producing to much surround sound. Couldn't stand it.

Yes i have hdmi to the reciever and out of the reciever going to the tv. I use to work at a Best Buy and one of my old co-worker says HK has problems with their hdmi ports. Im hoping thats the problem. I dont want to be stuck with a reciever that i seem to have to wire differently to get to work right.

I dont feel like im getting too much surround. It doesnt happen with my cable or xbox 360, just the Ps3. Also ever since i hooked this thing up i have very faint line running through the middle of my tv.

If you just bought it you might want to take it back, because using the HDMI port for has been a mess for me. Plus it's to late for me to take it back.

Sucks doesn't it. I bought it before I could even use the HDMI. Big Mistake it looks like. I'll admit, even with the optical surround sound it sound really good.

Well if things dont work out im going to wait for them to release their new products and see if somehow i can pull some crap where they let me upgrade for a price. Well i have had an elite 360 with hdmi for a while now but since i got my ps3 is when the problems started.

I have the same receiver as you (avr247). Definately go HDMI from PS3 to receiver then to TV, you dont need to go to the tv if you have component cables, but if you want 1080p or dvd upscaling/ps1-ps2 game upscaling, you need hdmi. On the PS3, go into audio settings, set to HDMI, automatically set audio options, that will get you hd-audio. In BD-DVD options, set blu-ray audio hdmi to Linear PCM. There is a lot of settings on the receiver to get things to sound right, crossover settings, distance, etc. Just make sure you did the speaker setup correctly with the supplied microphone. Hope this helps. By the way, I love my hd-audio setup. Im glad I bought that receiver.

Do you know how to adjust the surround sound speakers. I would like to set it up like I had it the first time, but the surround sound speakers were about to blow my ears off. IK know I had to adjust the front speakers down so I can here people talk. There's only limited things you can do when you have it set up unless you know something I don't. If you can help that would be cool.

I might not answer right away because I have to get ready for work.

Well i contacted HK and found out my reciever doesnt have the most recent update. Im hoping after installing this that things will be different. I used the microphone to set it up. As far as when its working everything sounds fine but i would obviously prefer if the audio didnt cut out.

Anyways, i went out and got a new one with the update already installed. I think my first one was just completely messed up. I dont know if the update made a difference but there is a world of different in quality. I think the picture even looks better. Sound is a million times better.

My only hesitancy with getting an HK is the HDMI is profile 1.1. I'm waiting for them to update their HDMIs to see if they come out with even 1.3 on the next series. Even 1.2 would work for me. I want to be able to at least be able to play SACDs w/ my PS3. And since the PS3 sends only LPCM, 1.3 wouldn't make any difference for bitstreaming audio on BDs.

Well just be careful from what i have heard they have some serious hdmi issues. I talked to a guy at best buy that i know and he said their store went through 2 of them in the demo area and he went through one himself. I like them but you have to get one that works. Kinda reminds me of an xbox 360.
