Default Oprah giving away Star Trek on HD DVD

WTF? ... I watched Oprah yesterday, and William Shatner was on. After talking with him she gave the audience the entire series of StarTrek in full High Def, hddvd. The showed it up close (hddvd) right on the boxes.

What a waste. Doesn't she or her production staff have a clue that hddvd is a dead format, and most audience members will never be able to use those free high def versions of StarTrek.

Did Toshiba buy her out a while back or something, or is someone on her production staff a complete red ant?

Oprah + her regular audience is generally mis-informed about everything in life so this is no surprise whatsoever

Isn't she the reason why Planet Earth HD DVD outsold the Blu-ray version? I read somewhere she held up the HD DVD copy and told everyone to buy it.

Hardly educated consumers.
This reminds me when I was at costco the other day. Someone picked up planet earth and made the comment "Oh, this was on Oprahs favorite things list" as she put it in her cart. I just can't believe that she has that sort of power over mindless people.

Oprah supports anything she's paid to support when it comes to DVDs and such.

I'd say Paramount is just looking to dispose of some of the thousands of copies they have languishing around warehouses

I saw this yesterday too. I don't think she mentioned HD DVD this time though. Since they are combos they can still use it fine on DVD players.

Shrug Not like they're going to sell them. Might as well give them to an audience. When they go back home and can't play them, they'll probably shrug it off since it was free anyway.

No they won't because the set is a combo HD DUD + DVD

This show might have been taped before the format war ended.

I'm sure she and her entire staff are completely ignorant of the entire situation. And the fact is, they will play on DVD players (if they are lucky and their DVD player doesn't crash) even though they will have no idea they are not HD.
Who cares. Blu won, let her give away the HD DVDs they can't sell.

Meh. She supports HD DVD. Just another reason no one should watch her crappy show. But this episode was probably recorded a little bit before Toshiba quit HD DVD. Just a note.

Lol - she has more money than you so she must be doing something right.

I have talked to her quite a few times. She's not as dimwitted as you might think.

I can't believe that people let stuff like this bother them anymore. Do you think that suddenly everyone is going to HAVE to go out and buy this? Do you think it will really have any effect on HD DVD. Toshiba gave up. They have to sell them somehow and the DVD side is still a DVD. It's not like Oprah was endorsing HD DVD by saying everyone go out and buy an HD DVD player so we can keep this format up and running and kill Blu-ray! William Shatner was on the show, They gave Oprah a bunch of the sets to give away to the audience. It iis not like this is going to have any other effect. I could understand if they did this months ago when it first came out, but now...
