Cinderella Man, a Universal movie that is only available on HD DVD in the US, is available on Blu-ray in Japan.

I believe some Universal movies are distributed by different companies in other countries and therefore available on Blu-ray.

Haha, and like MS can't even get their VC-1 codec to JDM shores (since even all HD-DVD discs in Japan use MPEG-4 AVC)

Cinderella Man is a Universal movie and it is available now from Amazon Japan on Blu-ray.

Well I wouldn't quite toll the bells yet. Cinderella Man is probably distributed by a different company than Universal.

It used to be on DVDs that Sony PE in Japan gets distribution rights to select Universal titles distributed in the US. I don't know if the situation has changed since then.

The movie was from Universal and Miramax. Miramax is Weinstein now, but I believe Disney distributed Cinderella Man outside of North America. So, this Japanese release is probably from Disney.

You are correct, as the Japanese release is from Disney and not Universal. It's up on Disney's Japanese Blu Ray page, http://www.movies.co.jp/blu-ray/

As WriteSimply said, don't get too excited. Cinderella Man is a Disney film in Japan and not Universal, so no defection yet. Similarly U-571 and Spy Game are distributed by EIV in the UK (I believe).

Its not about Universal being neutral...its about not needing to support two formats.

Who cares who distributes them as long as they play in our players.

And even though the Japanese releases may be expensive compared to the US releases, given time, the Korean and Taiwanese releases will continue to come out and they'll be much closer if not less than US releases, as we see with DVD.

In the meantime, I just rent Universal DVDs and upscale them. Or watch it on HBO or Cinemax in HD.

Warners announcement that they will be releasing all their initial HD DVD movies on Blu-ray in 2007 is great news.

Yes I know this, I was just explaining that Universal haven't had a change of heart in Japan (or any other country) - so let's not get too excited yet. Currently it's only one film, I'm sure there will be others, but Blu Ray won't be getting the full Universal catalogue anytime soon.
