Default You just can't help some people...

So I was in my local Best Buy on Tuesday picking up 30 Days of Night. Big A-hole looking guy comes in with is wife/girlfriend following behind. In a sense of entitlement sort of way he jumps in front of me when I was browsing the Blu shelves pick the cases up, turning them over and examining the boxes like it confused him. Which I believe it might have.. After a few minutes an associate came over and he said Hey... Where are the High Def movies, she watches a lot of movies and we want to use our new TV to get a better picture. The poor little kid said.. we'll you're looking at some of them there. A-hole guy says no, not that Sony only format, the one that's like a DVD only better picture and that I can buy something to add to my X-box. The kid then shows him the drive he needs to buy and the movie section. The entire time I had both the little devil and angel on my shoulders saying let the A-hole blow his money vs. do the nice thing and tell him about the current state of HD vs. Blu. The nice angel won so with is $99 Xbox add on in his hand and at least 7 HD's, so far, while looking for more, I politely interrupted him and told him he might want to reconsider, the format is on it's way out, no manufactures, not studios the standard stuff. His lady, with her beaten dog sort of look, said to A-hole maybe we should look into it. He said thanks to me and continued browsing the section. When I finally walked up to the counter he had 15 HD DVD's plus the xbox add in. In my head played out a scene where a month from now he blames her for wanting high def and how he wasted his money.

Just thought some of you might get a kick out of the story.

I'm pleased you did the right thing and provide him with the 'truth'. What he does with that information is entirely up to him. That type of scenario is played multiple times a day at those mass merchants. Sad and pathetic! [Jim]

He made Sony sound like the Devil, well I believe Toshiba’s logo is read and their format was red, and they are the ones who said FU to their supporters.

Just watch in a couple of weeks his decision will haunt him and kick him is the balls.

You did the right thing to help.

same sort of thing (regarding uninformed consumer) happened to me.... was in a Target, the wife was picking up diapers, and other random items, so I took my son over to the HDTVs (he's less than 4 Months old... he loves bright colors!) so I see this guy, real Sh!t Kicker looking guy, and he's saying "I see this is the only 1080 t.v. you have, etc. etc. " and he's talking about getting this t.v.

It's a 1080i so I figure I wouldn't be able to explain to him, that the 720P Sony television beside the westinghouse he was looking at had better refresh rates, etc... but I thought MAYBE, just MAYBE I could tell him that 720p and 1080i are gonna be the same picture for him.... Then he starts asking the sloth working there if it came with an HDMI cable, because this much he knows...... "HDMI Cables cost $100" she says "no we have one for $50" and here I'm thinking I could tell him about MONOPRICE, and save him $45..... He calls over his entire hill-billy white-trash family (white girls with names tattoo'd on their necks.... I can't make this up) and at that moment, I thought "forget it" and let it go......

Besides, he was wearing a Fake Leather Ohio State jacket, so I didn't think I would be able to grunt mono-syllabically enough for him to understand me anyways.....

Man,

I would have just not talked to him. I'll admit,.. I would likely be somewhat frightened by someone that dumb.

He has to be part of the story on Yahoo the other day about how many Americans can't read.

Beta-man, I think you're closing statement is going to generate more conversation in this thread than anything else. In regards to the OP's statement, is it me, or is this not how each and every one of us has pictured HD DVD fanbois?

I have worked retail and am in no hurry to entangle myself with their stupidity. Twice so far guys in the blu-ray section struck conversations with me and the outcome was always positive. Once or twice I saw people in the red section and let them be. I never regretted that decision. If they really want a second opinion, they will ask.

People just don't want to be informed, much less learn anything on there own. Then they would have to think and apply themselves. The state of people not being able to understand and research the best option sounds to me like a small example of where the country itself is going. I many times find myself looking at people like you have got to be kidding me.

I have a friend who I went over and over with this on. Directed her to this forum as well as notable other links explaing what was happening in the industry. She slaps me in the face by purchasing an HD DVD player.

I also love the people who think it's just Sony vs Toshiba. Who cares what the format is? Again research and choose the best product, you would think.

There is also on article on SLATE.com today about the trials and tribulations of an Hd-dud buyer. Pretty entertaining article from the not-so-intellectual people who ran out and purchased.

If I told you all how often I see this at the electronics store where I work, You would barricade yourself in the bathroom, while you weep for the human species.

Sadly, all too common.
