Default Av Receiver V.s Speakers?

well i have a question people.
please forgive me if some one already posted this thread.
well ok im a noob on audio for home theater and i am trying to purchase a sony av receiver that is 660 watts and i want to get some sony brand speakers also but the problem is that the watts on the speakers add up more than the wattege of the receiver. the tottal wattage of the speakers together is 890 watts..!! and the receiver can only out put 660 watts.
is that ok or do i have to purchase some amplifier with my receiver?

when i looked at the information of the sony speakers at sony.com it said the book shelf speakers can max out 120 watts.
now is that 120 watts for both the 2 speakers or is it 120 watts per speaker?
please help im a newby so im just trying to learn

We were all newbies at some point. Don't worry about the watt rating on speakers. It's more of a guideline than anything. It's not like that's the amount of power they put out. That is based on your receiver. In general, you can't really overpower a speaker, unless you leave it fully cranked all the time. Besides, the actual wattage output of most receivers doesn't reach the full rating given by manufacturers.

Any reason you want Sony speakers? I'm not saying they are bad, but I just want to make sure you don't feel that you need to get the same brand of speakers as your receiver. There are a lot of brands out there, and they'll all work fine with your receiver. Just pick what you think sounds best.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

Far as I know the quality speakers are usually looked at for the type of cone they use.. Driver they use... What their cabinet is made of for example medium density fiberboard or high density fiberboard.. What connections they have like bindng posts or spring clips... Spring clips are the crappy ones...

Things like that... Depending on your budget the world is your oyster..

Good companies other people would recommend

Klispch
Paradigm
AV123
Aperion
Ascend
Polk
Mirage
and the list goes on...

The Sony STR-DG 810 (6.1, about $350) or 910 (7.1,about $450) are outstanding for the money.
They both have full HDMI switching and most of the new ausio formats.
These will be replaced in June/July by the 820 and 920, both 7.1. and will have ALL the new auduo formats. Prices $400 and $600 respectively.
As far as speakers are concerned, do yourself a favor and skip the Sonys. Buy spealers from a SPEAKER manufacturer, such as the ones mebtioned above.
Good luck with your choices!

If you get non HTIB Sony, the speakers are actually impressive... I'm know there is better out there but I have always supported Sony and their products never disappoint me. Buy their higher end speakers though, if you get a cheap set you will get what you pay for, which is probably what most of these people are bashing.

The highlighted part is not true. You can blow a speaker no problem with high powered spikes the speaker can't handle.

Just the same, you generally want your amp to have double the power your speaker can handle. Reason being, an amplifier works best at half power, if you go much higher you start clipping it --> distortion, bad sound.

But you have to be careful and know when to stop turning up that volume knob

+1 - too much power and your speakers will start making popping sound because your are exceeding their Xmax parameter. This parameter details the maximum distance the cone can move before being physically limited by the foam/rubber surround edge on the speaker.

You can also cause the voice coil to move beyond the magnet and damage it on its return trip.
