Default sorry, but black bar question

I've been searching the forum, and reading the "black bar" sticky but can't find what I'm looking for.....

My very small 37" aquos is connected to a PS3 for blu-ray playback, and I've gone through all the settings I can find.... I can usually adjust the picture etc. but I got THE SIMPSONS from Netflix to check it out, and the black bars are at the TOP/BOTTOM and SIDES!! 4 inches from the top/bottom/left/right it's pretty annoying because I'm not going to be able to sit in my normal chair, and will have to sit on the end of the couch b/c the screen is so small!!!!

Am I missing something in the setup, or is this how this movie will have to be watched? I don't think my T.V zoom function works when my T.V. is displaying Blu....

Again, sorry for this post, but my search came up empty!

How is the PS3 connected? HDMI? Component? Composite? The cables that came with the PS3 maybe?

Have you watched through the end of the Itchy & Scratchy movie at the beginning of the film? Because that's when the picture assumes its proper AR.

Never mind...... it went to normal wide-screen after the opening scene...... I guess it was for dramatic effect, and I jumped the gun!!!!

First, black bars all around is almost always a legitimate question, as that almost always indicates a problem. Nobody here is arguing for black bars all around! Just in one dimension where appropriate to show the original aspect ratio.

Second, I had the same exact reaction you did. The funny thing is I had my PS3 and TV for a couple of months, but when I put The Simpsons Movie in and it started out with black bars all the way around, for some reason I jumped to the conclusion that something was wrong with my setup. But then I thought I remembered they did some gag going to widescreen, and, sure enough, that was the case when it got to the credits and the professor stretched the screen.

Many movies are multi format/ratio, so if you're not familiar with them you might think there's something wrong with the settings or the transfer like the OP. (Heck, some newbie projectionists get taken off-guard and start changing lens in the middle of the first screening. that's fun to watch in a sad way)

Here's some more multi format movies:

Enchanted
Brother Bear
Galaxy Quest (had 3!)
Mad Max 2
Brainstorm
Around The World In 80 Days

Galaxy Quest had 3? I think I know where two would be, but 3?

1.33:1 for the opening clip of an "episode", went 1.85:1 until the hanger doors open where it switches to scope

The DVD eliminated one for "viewer simplicity".

Was fun synching the curtains on it on the HT to recreate the 1.33/1.85/Scope theater viewing experience

As in, they eliminated one to cater to simple viewers?
