Default Robin Hood BBC series

Can anyone tell me if this is any good? I'm in states and I've never heard of this and just saw an ad for it. I was wondering if the series is any good.

I enjoyed the first two seasons on BBC America. So much so, that I recently ordered the Blu-ray from SendIt. Hoping to get it soon.

Now, if only they'd release them on Blu in the US... along with Doctor Who and Torchwood, I'd be set!

IMO this is total junk! Watched like half of the first season hoping it would get better... wish they'd bring out the old tv show on BD at some point!

Torchwood season 1 is listed as being released in June on amazon.co.uk

Dr Who wasn't recorded in High Definition, well the first 3 seasons weren't anyway so it may be a wait for those, before they are remastered.

Hope this helps

I just finished watching season one and enjoyed it. I rented the season from Netflix and I am looking forward to season two being released but this is not a "must buy" for me. They were really close to making this a great show but went a little overboard on the Sheriff and some other characters trying to add humor to the show. Worth watching but I would not buy. The standard DVD season one is like $70 bucks in the states - to high for this show.

I watched this on BBC Canada. Quite liked it. I actually felt the Robin and his men characters were more realistically portrayed than in most other versions I've seen.

As to whether it's worth buying, I'd suggest renting a disc first. I'm on the bubble as to whether this is a buy or not. Perhaps not. Then again, unlike most on this site, I wouldn't take Transformers if they were giving it away, so like all releases, it's a personal call.

I very much agree with the last part of this.
I do not think that this show was total junk, it was just that they are trying to go the Xena/Hercules route and are not very good at .

I really enjoyed this series... and if it was released here in the US, I'd snap it up in a second... but I'm not real big on importing...

I watched the first season last year and enjoyed it. It isn't the best Robin Hood ever made, but it is one of the more fun versions. Sit back, turn your mind off and enjoy. :-)

The second season starts on BBC America some time in April, so hopefully they will rerun the first season so you can catch an episode or two. Having never seen it, I can't comment on the Blu version of this series.

I have it as an import from the UK, and I am very impressed. It is very much what you'd expect for a TV show transfer, tho, so don't get your hopes up too much. It isn't reference material. I'd rate the PQ a 3.5/5 and the AQ at a 4/5, given what we're dealing with here.

Word of advice: if you import the set from the UK (I used SendIt), a lot of companies have Season 1 listed as a Region 2 Blu-ray. It's not. It's region free. The confusion comes from the fact that Take 2 (not the software company) does the production, and their logo is a friggin' triangle with a "2" inside it. Ironically enough, the region code symbol for Blu-rays is... a triangle with a "2" inside it! Thus the confusion. But I've sampled the show and the extras and they all run fine in both the PS3 and the Sony BDP-S300.

The problem with the series is that Robin is adept at breaking into Nottingham Castle whenever it suits him, or engaging in all kinds of derring do, but if he only stopped on one of those trips into Nottingham and shot a few arrows into the right people, he would alleviate all the suffering of the townspeople, end the repression, end the danger to himself and his men, and restore justice to the land.

Does this ever happen?

Nope.

Why?

Gotta keep the series running. So Robin runs away. There's an episode where Robin catches the Sheriff and has him tied to a tree. Does Robin kill him? Well, he certainly wants to, and he struggles the whole episode with the question. If you think about it logically, though, you know what the outcome is going to be. Of course, Robin can't kill him. It's a TV series, and he's a high-profile character. He has to be back next week.

It's that kind of internal logic gap that frustrates me about much of episodic television. There was an episode of The X-Files in its eighth season when Dogget was killed, and then an Indian Shaman regurgitated gallons of grey goo into a body mold, and then the body mold formed into a new body for Dogget. Now one would think being reincarnated via the vomit of a Native American would tend to make one more open to extreme possibilities. Nope. Next week's episode, Dogget was the doubting thomas again.

Yeah, I hear you on this one. Of course, that's why the writers have made small adjustments to the series so now Robin considers the Sheriff to be "useful" just like Gisbourne (sp?) is "useful". There have been a lot more 3rd party antagonists lately.

PS... that episode was downright awesome, tho! Good quality drama.

Look in the news about the US Blu-Ray release... I think Sylin's alone on the picture quality.

It's pretty bad. Compression artifacts, banding, etc... doesn't make a very pretty picture. Worst picture I've seen on a Blu-Ray so far that wasn't the SD special features.

So the UK version is 1080p instead of 1080i? Anyone know about the German versions?

Well I ordered all the German versions since I can actually get season 2 and 3 on blu that way! Ordered the regular UK version of season one tho since it has 5 discs instead of four, so it must be special features or something.

Well got my UK version today of season 1. It is indeed 4 discs, not 5 like the picture said. Also, it is region free and the back says 1080i however, it's 1080p on my tv. So, the UK version has a better resolution apparently than the US.
