Arrow Sky & Paramount team up for Zulu and The Italian Job in HD

http://whathifi.com/home-cinema/arch...efinition.aspx

I look forward to the results.

BTW for those who may not know Sky is owned by Rupert Murdoch's company News Corp who also own FOX.

I will look out for these on Sky HD. Hopefully these will turn up on BD sometime soon.

It’s interesting that Sky appears to be contributing financially towards restoring them. Is Paramount broke lol. I wonder will they get any credit if they get released on BD in the future?

I suspect this is the only way to get such restoration work paid for, and it's very encouraging that the article says "Sky is now pro-actively looking at other opportunities to re-master other classic titles, particularly British product, to ensure the British film archive doesn't get left behind in a high-definition world."

I probably wouldn't buy Zulu on Blu-ray, but would definitely buy The Italian Job.

And Michael Caine says "I love HD, it's so difficult to watch anything else once you've watched HD. Of course, it's very unforgiving, especially on beautiful young ladies, but thank God I'm old, so I don't care...". Reminded me of having watched Rio Bravo on Blu-ray recently and thinking how great Angie Dickinson looked in it, they certainly didn't have the problem of it being unforgiving on her.

Anyway, I think this is great news, and I suspect that partnerships with broadcasters like this are the way forward for getting more classic movies restored and remastered for high def.

So what do you guys think about Sky HD at the moment? For me:

BBCHD: God love you but damn run programs all day!!
Channel4 HD: Go f**k yourselves, this channels not HD in any way.
Sky One HD: Hmmm ok for the most part but does skip sometimes.
Discovery/History etc: Always good stuff, you can tell they put the effort in.
Movies & Sport: Don't have so don't know!
Box Office: Haven't used it yet, no idea.
Arts HD: Great PQ but not a lot worth watching, very particular programs.

Any news any any further channels?

I've never actually seen the original IJ. Is the new Mark Wahlberg version comparable?

There really is no reason why all the movie channels are not broadcast as HD for HD subscribers. The other channels should improve with more tv shows being shot in HD. But i do agree that for example Sky Sports and Sky One are sometimes broadcast in standard definition. Also we in Ireland are not getting Channel 4 or BBC HD. But I have heard there will be more channels added pretty soon. We need more HD channels and less of those stupid filler channels Sky throw at us.

The movies are almost too different to compare. The original has such an obvious sixties look and style about it that any contemporary remake was always going to miss the mark in a lot of folks eyes.

I love the original (I grew up with it), but always temper my recommendation to people as not everyone is into movies that are so utterly "sixties".

I quite enjoyed the MW version due to the fact that it was not a scene by scene copy and did not try to force the wackier elements of the first.

The only real thing they have in common is the title, the use of Mini cars and that a heist is involved.

To be honest I prefer the original with Micheal Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill. It is more humorous and the caper is better done. The music is better too.

This news, and all the live footy games they show on Sky HD actually forced me to make the move from Virgin Media.

I'm waiting in today for my installation.. cant wait to see these movies in HD.

Default sky hd

I would say the Sky HD service is not worth the extra 10 quid. There is alot of upconverting and not much original HD content. Sport when filmed in HD is fantastic though.

Thanks you 2. I really like 60s style movies. I thought the original Thomas Crown Affair was great; so was the new one with Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan, but the original had a certain charme to it. And the music in that one was better, too

I will definitely check it out when it gets released.
