Ray Maguire, chief of the UK division of Sony Computer Entertainment, let slip a few details about an upcoming firmware when speaking with MCV. "Achieving one million PS3 sales faster than both PSOne and PlayStation 2 is even more gratifying considering PS3 is a premium product introduced at a premium price," he told MCV. "Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I'd personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey." [emphasis ours]

You will be able to send messages to people in games without having to leave them.

imagine hitting a button getting access to the cross media bar and going to music choosing the song, hitting a button returning to said game and the music would continue to play... This appears to be the situation many want.

Im kinda hesitant, worrying that companies will downsize there music departments thinking the user will provide his own music...

guys he says firmware 2.4 so what are we getting with 2.2 and 2.3? seeng how were in 2.1. and another note he says in game communication not in game xmb, are gettting only half of the feature? come sony dont fu@# with me.

maby were getting in game xmb in 2.20 and then later in game chat......wich if true is compleatly dumb...here is what i think

2.20 will be ingame XMB which will be this month or even earlier this week.

2.30 Will be Home integration updates.

2.40 They where talking about ingame communication. Not XMB. Don't get the two confused

and one day they hopefully will give us the ability to re-encode video directly from the ps3.

What's great about this is that it indirectly confirms that 2.2 and 2.3 will be out this spring/early summer.

assuming they just dont skip those. anyone have the history of the updates...see which ones were skipped over..if any that is, i cant remember

It will be nice when the PS3 can compete to the 360 in this department.

Summer is okay with me. Better than never. Add Home to the mix and hopefully, I won't have any real reason to play the 360, except the oddball game here and there.

a major update will skip over a few intervals, so if they introduce all of these at once some intervals would be skipped. I am guessing that home will be a 3.00, but then BD-Live will be a huge jump as well.
