Default Some thoughts about Blu-ray pricing

I'm a little bit worried about the pricing of recent Blu-ray discs here in Germany.

For example, "The day after tomorrow" is sold at 29.95 EUR, this would be 45.52 Dollars (but including German VAT which is 19%).

Most people I talk to say they will not buy such an "old" movie at this price.

On the opposite, most retailers have a firesale on HD DVD at 10 EUR (15 Dollars) each. They are flying from the shelves. A co-worker of me got 50 HD DVDs and a player for nearly nothing (but he also bought a PS3 for the BLU future).

What do we learn from this? The adaption of HD media would be much better if the prices for the discs come down quickly. The prices for players are still high, but the BD prices are the real show stopper.

Hopefully, this will be addressed soon.

Markus

You want to play in the HDM game? Then for now you have to pay.

Many agree pricing is high but the CE's and the studios want their money.

Not sure if it's fair to compare standard BD pricing to firesale HD-DVD pricing (for players and media). I've said it before, but an unfortunate result of Toshiba's failed "scorched Earth" strategy is to create this unrealistic expectation of how low HDM prices should be.

Any new technology is going to be expensive at the onset and should show a decline in prices as the technology is more widely adopted, manufacturing becomes cheaper, parts become cheaper, etc. I really think it's unrealistic to ask one month after the end of the "war" for prices to magically drop.

So when do we expect the prices to drop? (no sarcasim intended) I mean lately it seems all the good deals that we were so used to seem to have disappeared. Our very own hot deals forum is no longer that impressive anymore. I remember a time when the first forum I would visit on this site is the hot deals forum, now I just check it once awhile.

There is only one word that comes to mind when thinking of Blu-ray software and hardware prices...

The way i see it blu is in extremely high demand right now. Every single tues when a new release comes out (recently 30 days of night and We own the Night) its sold out at my local BB, CC, and wally world. They see that, and if they're selling at 34.99 a pop why change it? And of course its new technology so its going to be high.

All Blu-ray discs movies should be 10 dollars a piece and that's that!

Why do you say that?

If you find a problem with the pricing of Blu-Ray you're more than welcome to go to HD-DVD.

Have fun with that.

Welcome to the world of being a early adopter.

Why? Because you say so?

Well, I want a Pony and I don't see a Pony standing in my condo, therefore, the pricing will likely stay the way it is until they can get the pricing of manufacturing down to DVD-ish levels.

Unless you want Blu-Ray to shrivel up and die like HD-DVD, quit *****ing about the pricing.

Easy does it Logan. Maybe someday you will get your pony.

Sometimes the net price of some BDs I bought come close to $10 during special deals, B1G1, B2G2, or coupon discounts.

So you see? Just about anything is possible.

(Except for a BD release schedule from Paramount).

Then wait for the sales this Christmas, there will be BOGO's for this Christmas, I can guarantee it.

If Blu-ray should not end like SACD / DVD-Audio / UMD, prices need to go down. Period.

Actually, practically every newly released DVD is available at 10 EUR here. So how to convince people to pay 30-35 EUR for the same movie on BD?

If it would cost 20 EUR, for example, many more would end up buying the BD.

Please, don't count me wrong, I have over 40 BDs already and their number is increasing quickly (today 4 more are being shipped).

With the Toshiba firesale example, I only wanted to show that there is a strong demand for HD media, as soon as the prices drop to some point where it's acceptable for many people.
