Default something I'm afraid of...

I bought the PS3 60GB and Sony doesn't sell these anymore, meaning if my PS3 breaks, does that mean I have to settle for a downgraded PS3? I bought 3 year warranty from Futureshop, and I've been concerned about this ever since...

i'm affraid of spiders. and government wiretaps. not ps3 failure rates, because they are almost non existant

but as an owner of 2 60gb ps3s i can understand. but given the option i'd probably opt for the cooler running 40gb. especially cuz i don't own any ps2 games and i now have an external sacd player.

I've got about 20 PS2 games some quite recent and addictive, like Bully, and mercenaries I'd hate to lose the functionality, or deal with buggy emulation...

I am sure you can find a 60Gb on eBay. You might have to pay more for it, but you will have one. I have a 20 Gb and want a 60Gb

as an owner that got their 60gb on launch day, it failed and had to be returned to bestbuy. i'd imagine your extended warranty gets you a replacement ps3 at that time which model at the time is the main question. you should be able to argue your point should it come to using your warranty.

I'm sure Futureshop no longer has any 60GB in stock so if you had to trade in they would give you the system at the price point you bought it at. Since they no longer have the $599 price point you would be getting whatever system they have at their highest...currently the 80GB, but maybe another sku later. My brother had traded his 20GB at BB with his warranty and they gave him an 80GB, but they took Motorstorm out because his 20GB didn't come with a game. I was upset though because it did come with crappy Talladega Nights and it was the same price as the 80GB with the game, but he was happy.

your brother should have argued that his 20GB PS3 may not have come with motorstorm, but it did some with the PS2 emotion engine something the 80 GB PS3 lacks... they took out he game, in essence devaluing the system they gave in return for the 20GB system...

sounds like your brother got robbed, they have no right to open your product, or remove something because they feel it just. And besides, what the hell is he going to do with the game, its not for resale, sounds like he jacked your brothers game!

I have to agree with you. I was thinking of picking up another one when they were still plentiful, but I'm poor I still play plenty of PS2 games so I would be very upset if something happened.

If something did happen it would give me the excuse to get the sexy MGS 80 gig

I use all the funtions of my PS3 60GB all the time. I listen to SACDs on it, i play PSone, PS2, and PS3 games, I watch DVDs, BDs, and mp4 files, I stream music, burn music, and listen to CDs on it.... the only think i don't do with it yet is hook up a PSP to it, but I plan to change that soon too.
I would demand that if it broke, that SOny give me one of equivalent capabilities.
I doubt anything will happen but a co-worker just had to return his 80GB PS3 cause it stopped reading discs. He didn't have it surge protected and he lost power while it was on. It is are but it does happen. Still, I hear Sony will release a new PS3 soon with the same features as the 60/80GB models but with a bigger hard drive.

Sony has a stock of refurbished and probably new 60GBs in their warehouse specifically for repair/replacement issues - something I've heard from multiple sources.

So, if your 60GB breaks, you should be covered.

I couldn't imagine them trying to replace it with a 40GB as the 40GB lacks key features and therefore is not the same product as the 60GB. Imagine it like bringing your BMW into the shop and having them return you a Civic.

yeah, I've heard the same as theglide.

If yours breaks, I would contact Sony, not, Futureshop...you would have better luck deal with them straight.

If Sony had to replace a 60gb with a different model it would probably be an 80gb. I can't imagine a company downgrading you because their stuff failed.

An 80gb is still a Downgrade....

A lot of people aren't returning their 60gbs to the warranty depot, but getting them repaired at shops. Future Shop is horrible for this, even if you bought the warranty, they don't really send them back to sony most of the time, they have their own Repair Depots, and then you get the Big F-U from them...I hate future shop......with a Passion!

The downgrade is minor. If you wanted 100% compatibility without glitches, keep your PS2. The compatibility issue really depends on how big your PS2 game collection. The smaller it is, the more likely it's closer to 98%.

my 60 gig has had no issues for over a year now. if something did happen to it i think theres an option to pay sony to refurb it. at least then i would get my 60 back.

my only problem with the argument that you should just use a PS2 is that Sony promised BC when they launched PS3, it's okay to take it away from future models, but not okay to take it away because their stuff broke. I also own a PS2 as a backup, but the point was to play my PS1 and 2 titles ON my PS3 without a problem. I don't need clutter around my TV because a company fails to deliver on their original promise.

Unacceptable business practice.

LOL

A Best Buy employee just got a copy of Motorstorm for free off your brother!

The packaged media in the PS3 are marked as promotional and are not for retail sale (it's in the barcode). The store broke their agreement with Sony if they removed it for one, but also screwed over your brother.

I promise you that employee just put the game in his bag and went home with it since there is no way for BB to even trace the game as it's not in their system at all.
