Default Disc coating underrated!

I think alot of people that mention the pros of bluray miss out this very very important feature

I just for the hell of it checked all my BDs then checked all my DVDs for scratchs (games and movies). About 75% of my DVDs had some scratches or scuff marks and the BDs, zero, zip, zilch. its espeically great that the BD games have nothing on them considering the more frequent use.

Im very happy that this was included on blu ray, im very much a perfectionist when it comes to scatches.

So ok, ive put up a poll for you to rate how experiene with this coating!

The scratch coating was one of my top 5 reasons to choose Blu-ray over HD DVD. It has NOT disappointed me. I take great care of my disks, but my wife has been known to watch a movie and place the DVD on top of something with the data area being the one making contact with the surface.

so far no scratches, but I wish I was brave enough to do the scratch test with steel wool... I don't want to damage the disc tho...

Hey,

I've noticed the coating holds fingerprints really well. Recently, I discovered I could be identified by the prints on my Blu Rays then I cleaned them all and now I am sure to only touch the edges.

So,... I think it smudges or grabs oily fingerprints better then DVD ever did. However,.. whenever I clean a Blu Ray it always ends up looking brand new which is great for the ones I bought used.

I love that.

It does get the fingerprints pretty bad, but it's super easy to wipe off; much easier than DVD or HDDVD. One thing I've always noticed is that with Netflix, the blurays always come to me looking brand new. The DVDs and HDDVDs sometimes come with a pretty good amount of scratches.

My brother in law is the lazy type - throws his discs everywhere - sometimes they're in different cases, but usually they are kind of scattered everywhere. His DVDs look HORRIBLE and most can't play right. His blus, though, are pristine (when wiped down).

Why wouldn't they put that coating on CD's and DVD's too?

Sony puts it on their DVD-R's for the DVD Camcorders.

$$

It's necessary on BDs, not on CDs and DVDs

I am always careful with them but have had no problems with them yet.
I did lose the case to one of my CDs lately, and now I have it sitting out and I'm afraid it will scratch. I am going to back it up but I have no fear over the Blu-rays scratching.

If you are scratching the underside of BD then you are really careless or really trying to scuff the darned thing.

I have DVD's I have laid down on "safe surfaces" only to find I somehow have scuffs and scratches on them. I always handle them by the edge and such. DVD's and CD's are just soft pieces of junk material.

Smudges are no biggie. Little water and wipe.

I think to say there are no scratches is a bit much, but there's an undeniable improvement.

same here, especially when the local FYE has a thief trading in movies and I can get brand new releases still sealed for 25% less than retail + if you buy three, the third is 50% off.
