Default Indy 4 - Digital after all!

Good news, Spielberg has recanted his earlier statement and Indy 4 will be digital after all. IGN.com is reporting:

"After long insisting that his movies be released only on film, the New York Times reports that Spielberg's new Indy sequel will be released both on film and digitally. Paramount brass confirmed the plans.

The move comes as four Hollywood studios announced yesterday plans to convert up to 10,000 theaters in North America to digital technology over the next three years. The announcement was made at the annual ShoWest conference in Las Vegas."

wouldn't have stopped me from seeing it in theatres even if it has stuck to film

wasn't it going to be released to 12,000 theatres?

I think info was that it will be 12,000 screens not theatres.

Simple discription of Digital Vs. Film:

No scratches, no reel changes (that little black dot that appears in the upper right hand corner on average 12 times throughout a movie), brighter, sharper, cleaner image. But that's all if the people are using the digital projector's correctly. The theater I go to does not...

Yes! Will Digital Projector have black bars on every screen?

Film = old fashion movie theater complete with reels, scratches, dirt, etc.
digital = new theaters without dirt, scratches, reels, etc. plus better sound and image.

I think most theaters have a mix of digital and film screens but the move to digital is progressing. I have seen many digital films now, and I highly suggest this, especially with 3D films (i.e. Beowulf)

I always noticed a white circle that indicates a reel change is approaching.

I rarely go to the movies lately, but either film or digital I will watch this on the big screen.

Lucas was pushing this a few years ago, so that 3D digital cinema could be brought out. He showed some clips of Star Wars converted to 3D using some new process that he was excited about. Peter Jackson also had a clip from LOTR in 3D.

Spielberg thought he could dictate terms like a spoiled brat. But all people fall back to reality one day.

Spielberg likes film. Nothing wrong with that. He obviously changed his mind. If he wanted a film-only release he would have gotten it.

How ironic.

Lucas pushed for digital projection ONLY for Attack of the Clones, and recanted because of a lack of digital projector installations.

Spielberg pushes for film, and has to recant because digital projection has reached the point where denying it would constrict the number of screens you could launch on.

The extremes of projection opinion. Good friends. Working together on the same movie.

Spielberg wants Indy 1-3 released on Blu-ray. Lucas does not, at this point.

Gary
