Default Surround Sound Noobie

i bought myself a cheap HD TV a while back,.. as it was only for my bedroom.

however, recently i have noticed that sounds sound is off, and sometimes sounds quite tinny.

i found this surround sound system; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HTS3...5589266&sr=8-3

it says it connects via SCART, which is fine.

however;

if i connect this surround sound to my TV,... can i play my PS3, Standard cable TV, and my Upscaling DVD player via these speakers? .. as i never want to use the horrible TV speakers again.

so my PS3 for example;

PS3 --> HDMI --> TV --> SCART --> Surround Sound Speakers

... or whould this only work when playing DVDs on the free player you get with it?

if your tv has a optic fiber output then i would run everything to your tv and then run a optical to your reciever if it has one that should work then

My tv's optical output only out puts from ota signals, so you may want to check for what comes out of there first.

I just looked through the manual off the Phillips website, and it says that the HDMI is for output. It looks in the manual that there are only two inputs, standard RCA cables for audio only, and one for audio/video. I don't think that's what you want in a HTIB to get the connections that you're looking for.

could i not connect;

-----------------------------------------

PS3 --> HDMI CABLE --> TV

DVD PLAYER --> RGB CABLE --> TV

STANDARD TV CHANNELS --> TV

---

then connect my TV Audio "Output"..... to my Cinema System "Input"

---

TV --> RCA cable --> Surround Sound System

------------------------------

this way i could play everything on my surround sound system?

As I said before, that is one option for hooking things up IF the tv's audio output is setup for that. You need to give a name and model number for the tv so we can look at the specs. And, honestly, if its a cheapy it might not have that type of functionality.

I think what you really need to look into is going up a level in your HTIB and getting a system that has more digital inputs. If you get a system with a fibre optic input and a digital coax input, your problem is largely solved and you'll get surround sound. As is, even if you use the tv and it functions, your only surround sound will be from the dvd player built into the system.

You are only going to get surround sound out of one external device, because the system only has one digital input. This input is digital coax. I don't own PS3, but i'm pretty sure it only supports surround sound via HDMI and perhaps digital Fiber Optic. I don't think you'll be getting surround sound from your PS3 with this setup.

The device also has an analog AUX input for something else, but this will only be stereo or perhaps something like ProLogicII. These systems are very limited in terms of flexibility with other components. The real idea behind Home Theater In a Box (HTIB) is to give you functionality at a good cost, not to facilitate the operation of multiple components.

As for the optical output on the tv matter, you still need to be careful even if the tv has that feature, because that is primarily designed for output of signal coming through a digital tuner. Some tvs will allow pass through of anything coming in via analog outputs, but the digital output is different from manufacturer to manufacturer.
