Question WinDVD 9 Plus -or- PowerDVD 8 Ultra

Both Corel and Cyberlink are on the threshold of coming out with upgraded products, WindDVD 9 Plus and PowerDVD Ultra 8. Has anyone had a chance to preview these upgraded products or have access to the specifications / requirements? If so, can you please share?

I am currently using the WinDVD 8 OEM version for VAIO on my Sony VGC-RC310G Desktop. I have had moderate success playing BD's. Some play perfectly, some with jittery images, and some just don't play at all. I think this may be related to the fact that my PC is one of the first Blu capable desktops, released in 2006.

I would like to upgrade to one of the new player versions mentioned above. I am in no *great* rush, and can wait for the better choice (for a little while, anyway). I would prefer to wait for the upgraded versions of either product to save some $$. I've read that today is the scheduled release day for WInDVD 9 Plus, although there is still nothing on Corel's US site. I have not heard about release dates for PowerDVD Ultra 8 -- has anyone?

I am thinking that I would probably be best served by getting the software which requires the lower amount of system resources. I've researched this thread and it seems that the conventional wisdom / opinion is that PowerDVD (at least ver 7) seems to require fewer system resources versus WinDVD.

The BD Advisor tool "recommended" a CPU upgrade (I've got: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz), but I really am not interested in doing so, just getting the best performance with what I've got.

Any suggestions or advice are most appreciated!

The Beta version is already out, see this post

I don't know the scheduled release date, though ... anyone?

Has anyone gotten their hands on version 8?

Ooh looks shiny, though kinda similar to WinDVD 9's look. Wonder if they're waiting for profile 2.0 compliance to release it into the wild so-to-speak.

Thanks for the link, I really must learn to use the search feature.

Well, from a system resources point of view, WinDVD 9 is staying as WinDVD always has - More resource intensive than PowerDVD Ultra.

This is putting 7.3.3730a(today's update) against WinDVD 9 Plus.

*FOR NOW* I will be staying with PowerDVD Ultra.
We will have to see how PowerDVD 8 turns out for Blu-ray.

Have you been able to try out WDVD ver 9? I keep wondering if I should bet PDVD7 or wait for 8? (Still suffering with OEM version of WDVD for Vaio, for now).

Yes.
I have WinDVD 9.
PowerDVD 7.3.3730a is less resource intensive than WinDVD 9.

Until PowerDVD 8 gets released to where I can try it... between the two above I have now, I will stay with PowerDVD Ultra 7.3.3730a.

Hope this helps!

Hold on... can PowerDVD Ultra 7 users upgrade to version 8 for free? I bought it recently, like a month ago.

No, but there was a beta out that a few people were trying.
It looks different... I couldn't get the Beta to play a BD though.

Ugh, that sucks. Any idea what the upgrade will cost? I hope it's around $50 or lower.
