Does anyone else remember this two part movie on NBC? It's a low budget movie that takes place during the Cold War. U.S. initiates a grain embargo on Russia. Russia retaliates by sending in Soviet Special Forces into Alaska to sabotage the oil pipeline. During the same time a small Alaska National Guard unit happens to be conducting training when they run into the Russians. Low on ammo and outnumbered 5 to 1 they try to hold off the Russians until reinforcements arrive. Meanwhile thousands of miles away the Russian and US government try to resolve the issue diplomatically while the Russians deny they have invaded the US.
I grew up during the cold war so this one was a haunting movie for me when I was younger being that something like this could really happen. Did anyone else enjoy this movie? I highly doubt that it will ever see the light of Blu-Ray but I'd buy in on DVD without question. Last edited by DeeChizzle; 03-17-2008 at 11:18 PM. |

Got it! There's another movie titled world war III that was made in 1998 but it's inferior to the 1982 version IMO. I will see if I can find this movie Threads. Is there any military action in this film? That's what made WW III a great movie to me. It involved both military action & a political story to go with it.

Had to dig this one back up. Sorry
![]() Here are a couple of clips I found on youtube. Opening 6 mins to the movie. Radar station in Alaska. One of the airman is alerted that an unidentified aircraft has entered U.S. airspace. Unfortunately he's never able to alert his chain of command. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfqZDcLEiWA Another scene in the film where a National Guard unit is sent in to investigate the disappearance of a small squad of National Guard soldiers who they lost communication with. They find that they've been ambushed and killed and the colonel suspects foul play because one of the rounds they found in a dead soldiers was Soviet made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvBRz...eature=related |

WWIII was a fine miniseries for the time. It was produced by Operation Prime Time, which also produced a decent adaption of Ken Follett's The Key to Rebecca. They were trying to improve the quality of broadcast television by producing high-quality miniseries that were a bit more "adult" then what the networks were showing. In a sense, they were trying to do what HBO has done since, with more success.
But I would certainly like to see WWIII released on disc . . . |

The Day After was a made-for-TV movie directed by Nicholas Meyer. It pales a bit compared to Threads. Actually, Lynn Litman's Testament probably tops both, although that is an actual theatrical feature.
I have not seen WWIII since it was originally broadcast, but I stll have fairly vivid memories of all the blood in the snow and on the white uniforms. At the time, no one used squibs in television productions, but not only did WWIII do so but it made them really stand out by having everyone wear white for camouflage. I believe that it was originally broadcast with "parental guidance suggested" warning. |

Best WWIII film has to be When The Wind Blows. Shows how an old couple deals with the aftermath of nuclear war. Very powerful and moves me to tears whenever I see it.

I remember this one...it was during the height of we're all gonna get nuked in our jammies (sadly the world is closer to that now, then it was then)...
One thing that stood out as absolutely idiotic, I remember the brave defenders holed up in a bunch of corrugated metal tubes to defend themselves. Apparently they never heard of ricochets lol... |
