+1 And that's exactly it. Faking out a 480p picture to 1080p isn't going to make it high def - much better than standard, but definitely not high def.

They make more money from DVD owners. I do think its unfair to say that though because its a lie. They dont show your movies in high def

I could see how this would confuse your average consumer, but pretty soon the average consumer will be educated on the superiority of BD. Of course that's wishful thinking, but it can still happen.

Probably not for another 3 years. BD players need to make it down to the 200-250 range first.

speaking of confusing consumers, it irks me that buy.com lists Blu-ray discs as "Blu-ray DVD"! I left them a comment about it, but it says they don't respond to individual comments. Bah humbug!

Confusion. But there is no need for Toshiba hate. Maybe everyone should hate Sony when betamax died... Jeez

Looks like 1 year instead of 3 years =D

Sony CEO says that $299 will happen this Christmas, but $200 is not going to happen (at least not from them) until 2009.

As what Amazon is saying isn't correct isn't it by definition a lie? Therefore are they not open to legal action for telling consumers that a product will do something that it clearly doesn't?

It's obvious Sony doesn't want to go below $299 on Blu-ray players this year. But they're not the only manufacturer of Blu-ray players. Companies like Pioneer, Samsung and others could get a little more aggressive on the pricing.

There's also lots of Profile 1.0 players (and a few 1.1 models) that are now partially obsolete now that movies with BD Live features are in stores. Prices can't stay high for those players much longer. They'll be put on "closeout" as a new wave a Profile 2.0 players arrive on the market.

Upconverting DVD players aren't going to be on the market all that much longer. They may stay available in retail stores throughout 2008 and into 2009. But I think many retailers are going to get rid of them a lot sooner than most people think. And that's for the very simple reason those players are not profitable. I think Wal-Mart will be among few stores selling the things by the end of 2009.

I totally agree and can't even tell how many people I know think that a up-converted DVD is Hi-Def because of adds like this.

dude, they've been advertising like this for ages on the upconverters. It helps sell players. This is not some massive conspiracy by Toshiba. Look at the promo stuff for sony upconverters. They say almost the exact same thing.
